It seems like it would be nice as a norm, but not as a codified system with licenses and such.

Actually, according to Aweber, it does (at least for email subscriptions, displaying a chiclet with subscriber numbers increases opt-in). It's a form of social proof.

maybe the 100% rate is true, but not 100% career-ending injuries. Most people quit playing a given sport seriously because they have to choose between that and making money. I swam for 4 years in college and I only know 1 person who had a c

But it's just as true for all the "mainstream" topics he points to as easy traffic magnets. There are a zillion people trying to make money writing about celebrity gossip, too.

Next time you're in the bookstore, check out the chapter on conferences in Keith Ferrazzi's Never Eat Alone . It will provide a good counter-perspective. At my own company, we had our founder and a director present at a recent conference,

How many employees does Berkshire Hathaway have again? Something like 12 at HQ, I think. That would be a lot of tax revenue to disappear.

Off-topic but honest question: Why does everyone say "maths" instead of "math" these days? Is it a European thing, an academic thing, or just a meme among hackers? I never once heard it or saw it written like that before Hacker News / pro

I wholeheartedly disagree. I know literary criticism is about as popular as Windows ME here, but reading good examples of it can be as enjoyable as the text itself(1). Of course there's always the question of how much authority the critic

I thought it was a pretty civil exchange. All of nickb's points are fair and valid. Just wanted to put in my 2 cents. I guess 'linkbait' is kind of an inflammatory term, especially on a site with karma points, but it ought not to be.

I don't go to the Register for news, so their linkbait headlines aren't a problem for me until someone submits them here, even if it's unchanged. So I will complain here. Changing a "curiosity" headline to make it clear what the article is

I wrote a script a while back to scrape people's public profiles based on Google searches like this. Two things I would add to the article: 1) You get a lot of false positives, even with very well constructed Google queries. Especially,
