I love Swift but had to stop every time before getting serious for several reasons. As a language it’s just amazing. But whenever it’s come to performance on the backend, it would be not enough by a large margin. Take JSON serialization for

That’s a great point indeed. In Java and C++, there have been quite a few deprecations over the years and decades. In the Rust community, there’s unfortunately quite a lot of interesting but abandoned crates.

I think if the Rust team had the capacity they might have considered adding—and maintaining—more stdlib functionality. I never asked for details but I guess that the core Rust enjoys only a fraction of the funding Go and .NET have enjoyed.

Would be great to have a Homebrew formula for the font distribution. I know for a team of two it’s perhaps a bit beyond the scope, any plans on it by a chance?

Thanks for these insights, Ron. Indeed, it’s mostly due to the dependencies that it’s not always simple to upgrade. Some Gradle plugins must also be updated. Code generators are rather fragile and some of them bluntly violate javac constrai

There are lots of apps sold outside the macOS App Store. I’m unaware whether their vendors have paid a commission on those sales. Are they now affected by that move or is it only limited to iOS? Otherwise it would look like you know sacrifi

Yes it’s the echo chamber of the promotion funnels that makes it appear as if everyone were jumping ship every few days. In my bubble, Angular and React are the primary frontend frameworks, with Vue sometimes being ahead and sometimes behin

Oh what an immense loss, my sincerest condolences. Nick’s textbooks are a goldmine, it was my go to reference for many years, very deep and motivating, paving the road to much deeper and very thoughtful comprehension of numerical methods. V

I know what you mean but it’s been quite fine for me. With AWS, you have a JMS compliant message router in SQS, and SNS is okay, just might need an adapter to the message schema. I don’t like some of their limitations that are foreign to me

It might be purely marketing-oriented, or perhaps it’s just sales-funnel-oriented, who knows. And if anything unexpected pops up, look no further, the author can immediately come up with a new name for a decades old solution. Same happened

Of course, a classical trade-off. That’s why I’m taking time to discuss that here. The cost incurred by upstream updates reshuffling the hull makes it for hard budget and timeline decisions and risk management. That’s why larger projects wi

I’ve observed those issues on the industry default CSPs. Terrible latencies for some services. Some of those budget CSPs simply resell AWS and Azure and GCP and OCP, while others run on commodity VPS infrastructure. And honestly there’s sti

With IaC it’s become feasible. You kinda iteratively build it up. With something more predictable like Nix it really gets close to shops run by a single person. And on e you start to get managed infrastructure, next question that pops up wo

Gradle is still at JDK 21, albeit not comprehensively as it sometimes still fails to build on anything more recent than JDK 20. Most projects haven’t transitioned to JDK 17 yet. There’s a gap already. I don’t really want to draw parallels b

I don’t know, as many times as I approached ORMs in Rust, every time it felt more like it’s easier to ditch Rust altogether than to use an ORM. At some point you simply reach a significant complexity of your model declaration at which it’s

Definitely, microbenchmarks are what’s most striking especially because they seem immediately approachable, as opposed to a full fledged app with a variety of integrations. In that case the quality of the dependencies is much more important
