I can assure you that they are not hosting for free because the cost is zero and goodwill pays the bills. Read the TOS and privacy policy. If they’re not monetizing the data in their custody then it’s just more overhead that has to be cover

Why not do it then? Seems you would have plenty of customers judging by this thread and the others today asking about alternatives.

Same. Currently, I'm spending $10/mo on a VPS from OVH to host Forgejo. I have hourly backups to an rsync.net account I was already paying for. It's not the most efficient way to do things, but Forgejo is actually pretty nice

Maybe. You would either have to buy and colocate physical servers and pack the hell of them or develop something on AWS or GCP that aggressively scales down to zero. Anyway, how are you going to pay engineer salaries and 24/7 support s

This, in a nutshell, is why Github is the way it is and there's a lack of good alternatives. I'm not knocking you in particular because we're all pretty much in the same boat here. "I am willing to pay ~$5-10/mo fo

Fossil looks really cool. I like how it's all in one and includes the web interface. The only thing is it doesn't seem like anyone actually uses it outside of sqlite. I don't necessarily need to use the most popular thing out

Everyone is well aware of how crappy the launch was. From the article: "Speaking of No Man’s Sky’s updates, there have been 286 of them since launch. Hello Games has released 54 major updates as well as 232 smaller patch/updates a

Probably network effects, integration, just about everyone knows how to use it, high switching cost, the fact that it’s mostly good enough, etc. Even if you switch away from GitHub, you’re probably going to use it for something else anyway.

I self host Forgejo on a cheap VPS with hourly borg backups to rsync.net. It's a great system and seems comparable to github, although I'm not a heavy user of actions on either platform. I do use the container registry though. It

Interesting. My experience has been similar. Opus 4.8 was awesome. Opus 5 feels a little off, although I can't put my finger on exactly what it is.

I probably have the same strix halo box as you. It's slow, although mostly tolerable, but even 128 GB isn't enough to run good models. Where that leaves us is giving money to somebody to get access to frontier models. I don'

There's a big difference between quiet donations to a PAC - not that that's good either - and what Elon did. He literally paid for votes, likely in violation of the law. He poured more money into U.S. elections than anyone has bef

Purely anecdotal, but my experience has been that LLMs generate low quality python code. It's spaghetti code on par with what I've seen when companies I worked at tried offshoring development. It's basically what you get when

I would argue that Microsoft had a solid run for some years in the middle where their software was pretty good quality. I think it started with Windows 2000 and certainly lasted through the XP era. Windows 7 was pretty decent too. Their ope
