It will be interesting to see to what extent work travel is sort of a prisoner's dilemma: if we all just stay home, then, as you say, everything ticks along better and cheaper, but if it benefits someone to "defect" and tra

In case someone isn't aware, Designing Data-Intensive Applications is a very good introduction to distributed databases, even if it doesn't specialize in them.

I built a (diff) app that doesn't, but I have no idea how to promote that without making people even more suspicious.

I’ve been working on a codebase like this, and my major complaint is that I’ll see a deeply-nested test and have to scroll waaaaay up to understand the context. I prefer ‘foo_bar_baz’, ‘foo_bar_qux’ to foo <snip 1000 lines&

Where can I read more about the "decrease quite a bit"? People have been predicting that for centuries (Malthus, etc.) and they've all been spectacularly wrong so far.

That’s an interesting idea - you could even imagine an “Electron without the networking” so you wouldn’t have to take the whole computer offline.

My diff tool, diff.so, is a web app, but it doesn’t send the text to the server (unless you publish). I wish there were a technical mechanism that could guarantee and enforce that, and certify it to users.

The binary distinction between "cost centers" and "profit centers" has always seemed arbitrary to me (especially since, as an engineer, I've been in both without my work being substantially different). To be frank,

I agree with everything you’ve said, but I want to push back on the (non-load-bearing) “few have much energy for fighting the idea that literature should be studied for it’s own sake.” It seems to me that lots of people have endless energy

I think design thinking is one of the ideas that has won. My observations (n=small) are that people no longer blame themselves for not understanding complicated user experiences - they correctly blame the technology (and technologists) invo

Interesting - I view it the opposite way. In JavaScript, you need to know the details of exactly one numeric type: the regular, standard IEEE 754 float that's used by Java, Python, C++ (generally), and every other programming language
