It used to be. In modern engines it's really no longer the case. Just did a mini test running both attr and class name selectors on 10000 objects. In both instances the paint was fully complete in a single frame. Agree with the rest of

If you’re looking for a real world example of Webassembly being used in production at a large scale for performance gains, check out Figma. Their editor is all wasm based, and is really their secret sauce.

I think there's a chance this can happen when AV1 starts to gain adoption. Webp had a chance - you can have well encoded, looping video in a .webp container that operates exactly like an image. The issue was lack of adoption - it never

First time I've seen that style of visualization for the byte code. Really effective way of breaking it down though, and allows a good way of visually seeing sections of code.

I feel like Safari should be included in there as well. Safari is the new IE, they're so slow in adopting new specs. With IE having moved to chromium and Firefox having solid contributions to the spec and always being on the bleeding e

The hoarding of ventilators is what we should be mad at, not them paying to take the tests. Anyone can spend a couple hundred bucks today and get a grad student at your local university to run a RT-PCR for you. Kits are readily available on

The encoding still isn't ready for user driven content sites. It's still too slow, even with the 16% savings shown with the new improvements this article talks about. For Netflix it's great as they have a significant amount o

Heya Christian - huge fan of the app. I was wondering if you could share some of your journey / early designs for the app? It’s one of the most well designed mobile apps I’ve used and I’d be curious to see how it evolved in your mind.

Fair, but I think Netflix's approach is less nefarious than other platforms. At the end of the day Netflix wants you to do two things: value their platform and spread the word. With things like instagram and facebook, it's differe

More and more I think the whole ad-driven approach to sites is just unsustainable, as eventually they're incentivised to have dark patterns like this in order to drive up revenue and engagement. I'm working on my own alternatives,

Motion is a design tool like any other and can be abused if it's overused. A button that's a bright color will draw the eyes to that particular element... until that element is everywhere on the page. At that point it just becomes

Always cool to see new visual compression libraries hit the scene. That said I think the hardest part isn't the math of it, but the adoption of it. Likely the format with the best chance of overthrowing the jpg/gif/png incumb

For Netflix this likely doesn't matter. While Youtube deals with 300+ hours of content uploaded every minute that it has to encode, Netflix only has to encode ~100 titles per month. Even if it takes a month to encode 1 of these, it

This is one of those things you simply don't expect to test when you're benchmarking performance. I've been trying to cut away chunks of 20-50ms on a side project I've been working on hosted on a .io domain, and I'm

In my personal case I'm using it so the DOM is more literal as to what's happening on the page. I'm of the naive opinion that you should be able to read the DOM and have a general sense of what the site looks like. Since I&#x

I'm honestly shocked around how bad the experience is on the site. Mobile video especially. 30% of the time the video says "my account may not be allowed to see this video", even while logged out. Refreshing the page fixes it
