Layoffs ruin human lives. Suicides happen. Breakups happen, with and without kids. Homes are defaulted on. Depression is almost a certainty. If the choice is between layoffs and total company ruin, okay, they’re necessary. If the layoffs ar

People aren't cattle for you to get rid of. I'm tired of layoffs being a first resort rather than a last resort for companies. I'd like to see something where C-suite executives are required to resign if undergoing layoffs.

Really need the government to start heavily penalizing companies who lay people off. Layoffs can't be a tool for a company to get ahead financially. We're ruining lives and triggering suicides with these layoffs.

Seems pretty simple. The bottom of Maslow’s pyramid is under attack with unnecessary layoffs and offshoring leading to extremely dismal prospects of stable, long-term employment. What kid is going to feel good if their parents are constantl

On the other hand, Windows 98 looked like it was designed by 1955 IBM. It may have been an overcorrection but it was certainly a welcome one.

The far right is going hard against porn in multiple countries right now. I don’t agree but I get where they’re coming from. However, I don’t get going after porn before going after casinos. Casinos ruin lives and wreck economies far worse

C++ is usually better because you can start with the abstractions (e.g. new, classes, I/O streams, and strings) and then work each one backwards once they’re comfortable at the high level. (Although C++ wouldn’t be my first choice to b

Carbon is really exhibit A of why MVPs exist. Jai and Cppfront have the same problem but Blow and Sutter probably don’t care if they never gain much traction. Conversely, Carbon is Google-backed (IIRC) and will soon die if it can’t justify

Humana is starting to hire nurses in the Philippines. One would think that’s a national security hole but what do I know. The first candidate to promise an outlawing of outsourcing gets my vote.

No, but health is already a protected class in employment laws. Any employer pulling or seeking that information in any way would open themselves up to a class action lawsuit by everyone who had ever been rejected from that company.

HIPAA was a stupid mistake by the Clinton administration. I really don’t care who has my medical history and the field of medical study would be infinitely better off if it was public.

The copyright laws are unjust to begin with. Copyright shouldn’t last beyond ten years anyway. Simply claiming that piracy is always bad ignores the evil of the laws in the first place.
