How are those contradictory? I get rid of my dictionary, my other books still work. I, personally, understand the shortcut. Do you want to not break stuff or educate consumers? One of those sounds really expensive. I mean, it’s a clever thr

I haven’t looked in years, but the prices and regional modifications paid by Medicare were available. Check the docs for electronic submission. Maybe that’s been taken down? Always seemed like a reasonable place to start.

It seems like you're leaving out a bit about information asymmetry. maybe multi billon dollar companies don't have any extra facts that aren't available to somebody in the 'gig economy' but this [1] keeps ringing a

Are they? I don’t mean to be fussy, well maybe a little, but when you ask for something from Atlantis, and Atlantis responds, is that interaction at your place? Is it in Atlantis? Some weird combination of the two? I don’t outright disagree

There are a few. The AA advertisement up in the air, the counterfeiter catch me if you can, and Sophia copala’s lost in translation all spring to mind. Not smashing successes, but sort of light stories about nothing when nothing happens. Ge

Yes. Yes it would. But comparing against baby aspirin might be worthwhile. There is some (safe?) effect beyond sugar pills. Remember, the patients don’t know each other, and don’t compare symptoms. Hopefully.

200 billion is a lot, but something in the ballpark of just 7%. [1] I agree, it’s hard to measure, but do you think those estimates are more than 3% off? Best case, eliminating all drug research saves you 10%. Although if costs in other are

The jvm is really nice. Operationaly, it’s kind of a pain. You can upgrade the installation on bare metal, you can play the packer game and ship new vms, or you can have crazy fat docker containers. K8s can sort of deal with the vm model, b

This is a great article worth reading. I found myself walking around my apartment having a conversation with my imaginary version of the author. There are at least four points that i would quibble over. That said, i like the analysis. In sp

This is super neat! i'd encourage anyone who liked this to check out dybvig's thesis[1] - super readable. It's neat to see how you can cleave the runtime system and compile time system. The first two chapters, at least, are

Did you get that backwards? Also, this map looks a lot like a population density map - it’s great housing is cheap in Nebraska. But there’s just not many people there. I would say Pennsylvania and Ohio might be worth looking at though. >

It’s hard to explain “from scratch”. A blind person can certainly perform the task. But, uh, how do you translate the image to something sensible? Heck, I’d bet high school kids that have never seen the ocean could be fooled often with imag

There is an eaisier question. Is it better to have more ambulances or faster ambulances. Faster wins every time. Analogy is a terrible argument. But I kinda think faster transportation beats more transportation every single time.

Corruption is a thing. The specific organizational model really doesn’t seem to matter much. In a game theoretic sense, I think the only option is to make whistleblowing optimal. I like rules. Weird shadow rules that aren’t written down mak

There was also a world wide depression. I kinda think that paying the minimum possible attracts low quality workers, which is ok, but sub optimal. Making the pay competitive, like it was then, might reduce the total cost.

I always thought this kind of stuff would be the killer app for machine learning. Products slowly drift out of tolerance, and the ml applies corrections to get back into tolerance. Apparently there’s just not enough data to respond well.
