The code isn't necessarily the relevant thing. My early Rails code was terrible, but my manufactured experience WAS "commercial" experience, since I had real users (in some cases paying users).

That's one of my favorite books. You could also say that this is an application of Be Proactive (decide what technologies you want to learn rather than only using the technologies handed to you) and Begin With The End In Mind (I eventu

You can come pretty close. For example, I spend maybe 15-20 hours teaching myself AngularJS, and then the next AngularJS work I did was paid work. Also, if you get a job where you have at least partial control over the technologies you use,

That's actually a pretty good point. Networking is a more effective way to get work than just scanning craigslist, although I can see why you might call these tips "shortcuts" since from the perspective of a naive job seeker

This stuff is mostly consistent with what I've found to be effective. I would also really emphasize the effectiveness of learning about your prospective employer, not just the company but the actual individuals in it. Demonstrating tha

From what app is the screenshot in slide 25?

I'd like to point out that $25 is probably not too much to pay for a book that might earn you an extra $X,000-$X00,000 over the course of the rest your career. There's of course a chance that you could read this book and increase

I assume the author of the announcement wrote the example code with the longshot hope that some Stripe users would say, "Hey, I guess I'll send Amber Feng three thousand bucks, just to see if this works." Takeaway point: always write code e

I think Rob Walling's "What the Hell Does a 'Business Guy' Do?" article does a good job of answering the question. Link: http://www.softwarebyrob.com/2011/04/19/what-the-hell-does-a... After reading this article, I thought, "Okay, 'busine

The article has a pretty good point. I might add that a potentially better way to improve your speed/effectiveness is to deliberately take time to regularly sharpen the saw. http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2009/03/sharpening-the-saw....

Yeah, I really need to fix the plan thing. Didn't catch that until people pointed it out on here. Good suggestion on Twilio, too. That's actually on my list.

Good point. I used to have a demo but I killed it when I redesigned the site. Need to clean up that artefact.

You're absolutely right on with your first three points. Thanks for highlighting those things for me. To address your fourth point, I do share that concern, although I do feel pretty good about the market. I've physically visited several do

I've been working on my startup, Snip, for about two years and I have a few customers. I've been learning more about internet marketing and I just rebuilt Snip's website. Any thoughts/criticism/advice is very much appreciated!

Also important: when I want to have a chunk of productivity, I close email and don't check Twitter/FB/Reddit/HN or anything like that. I'm obviously not trying very hard to be productive right at the moment.

I often do the same thing as you, where I get up early (6ish for me) and do a couple hours of work before the start of the actual workday. The most important part to me is to make sure that I'm only doing things that actually matter. So whe

You might be right about that. I'd like to offer another perspective, though: if you get into the habit of quickly replying to all emails, I think your clients will develop an expectation that you'll always quickly reply to emails, which it
