Two things: a) PHP has multiple platform support (ie. Windows, OSX, FreeBSD, Linux) so you can more easily transition when necessary and b) the OS licenses required when you scale out horizontally are cheap (free!) for Linux, FreeBSD, which

I have a 15" currently - but I think I might make my next one a 13", for portability. Lightweight means a lot to me - and if it's got great options for a high resolution and large external monitor then I'm happy. Hell, with DisplayLink tec

I find it curious why someone would ask this on Quora, rather than simply asking it here on HN. You would get a far more focused and realistic response - from the community itself.

I realise that PhotoShop is all the rage in web design and the de facto standard tool in which to bring creativity to the web... but I'd love to see a good tutorial using some open source tools. Is this even possible?

I'd be interested in your open-source Django app. Sounds like a great idea.

If the content/information exists elsewhere but just needs aggregation, you need to massage/import in order for it to be useful to you future users - so take the plunge and import it so that users will find your service useful, even if this

Given the fact that server failure is a 'when', not an 'if', I'd recommend using "Google Apps for your Domain". It takes the hassle out of it all (as you already likely already know!) and leaves you (and your team?) free to focus on making

This is really handy - many thanks! Assuming that a release-1.2.1 branch existed and a hotfix was needed, what would the the hotfix be versioned as? 1.2a? 1.2.1a? 1.2.1 and then bump the release to 1.2.2?

Too bad he never finished his 4-part write up. The linked article was pretty interesting to read. In one of his later postings he mentioned APE (AJAX Push Engine) - anyone taken a look at that?

Think of a simple problem to solve... and then solve it in a few different languages. This way, you figure out what you like, because everyone is different. You might even be more focused in your learning and select specific frameworks for

Burnout takes a lot of forms, has many stages and is felt differently by everyone. Are you happy with your job - or just the salary that you get paid? Take some time and think about your motives for staying where you are. Maybe you can loo

A startup I know has engaged audiences early on through Mechanical Turk. Basically, they brainstormed and came up with around 10-20 domains. They then registered them all to prevent their loss to others. They spent some time speaking wit

I'd guess the fact that education (giving back to society) has fallen prey to acquisition (taking from society) - in terms of priority, anyhow. Don't get me wrong here. I'm all for making money with crazy business ideas, but it's important

Try a Python framework - there's enough of them to work with. The good ones (like Django) have a structure and standards that make sense - and have great tutorials, for the most part.

You might look into using Quickbooks - they have addon payroll options (I've not tried payroll though, sorry). I do like Quickbooks, however. Most accounting firms work well with the data files. Good reporting.
