I recently spent some time in hospital fighting pneumonia. Hospitals are exceptionally boring places. I loved it. I loved not having to do anything, not having to make decisions, not having to constantly think. The highest priority of my da

It's surprisingly common. Here's[1] the most recent example of Schneier talking out of his domain with the potential to cause damage. The problem is that Schneier is a pundit, not a security expert. He has a good knowledge of cryptography b

Well it's a good job that only a guy and his family's life were ruined, but thank goodness she didn't have to consider the implications of shaming the offenders by asking the two guys to stop violating her moral righteousness first.

After the Tetris debacle[1] on iOS and putting obtrusive adverts into their iOS games for new ones despite me paying for them (a cardinal sin IMHO) combined with endless DRM debacles and horror stories about how employees were treated, I to

I know what you mean, a lot of the time these things read a bit like this: > In '87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people prob

If you can get to the point where your customers are getting "fucked", then you don't deserve them. You can't take pride in a job well done if you're screwing people over.

I think the author misses the most important thing: The customer. I'm genuinely mentally obsessed about customer service. When things go wrong (and they do, it's only natural) I painstakingly pull them apart to make sure we know why things

I've read about that, and to be fair religion has a major cultural impact but I'm not sure how significant it all is in the grand scheme of things (given changes in religion over the years, reformations etc.).

I have an idea that the differences in work ethic across Europe may be partly to do with climate and partly to do with language. In France, the verb 'work' is travailler . Traditionally this meant literally to toil, a chore, an obligation.
