This reminds me of a video I saw about scaling with ruby on a niche social network ( http://zenbach.com/scaling-fetlife-com-with-ruby ). It was an interesting talk, but they also tried MongoDb and moved away from it, though, they were also

It really says something about Dublin that the path avoiding pubs passes right by the Guinness brewery.

Honest question: what happens to developers after they are no longer "Developers"? As a 29-year-old I'm kind of freaked out by the fact that I'm on the older part of that distribution.

I'm definitely one of that core group, but since the twitter app started doing push notifications on mentions the only notifications I get from Notifo are ones I send myself from my webapps. Grantit, I've found those insanely useful, but

An open war between China and the US would not happen. Killing your customers is exceedingly bad for business.

While it might be more successful to have 8500 (fairly large) seed investments, Microsoft is not a venture capital firm. If one were an investor in MS, I'd would wonder why they were using my capital for other companies and why I shouldn't

It's especially unfortunate since there is a Google office in Waterloo. I know it's probably pretty complicated, but I feel like this isn't really a benefit to the Canadian startup ecosystem.

"Normally I'd just ignore or delete the app if it's bad" I think the popups are counting on this. People who have used an app "n" times probably have a favourable view of it, which is why they are being prompted to rate it.

It never ceases to amaze me how companies will spend months trying to find someone with skills that take weeks to learn.

I actually figure that's harder. There are no shortage of people who "talk the talk", but its hard to see who'd be good at raising money, getting customers, and biz dev based on interviews. At least with techies, you can see if they can bu

Adding to your point, it is very important to note that France French != Quebec French. When a Montrealer goes to Paris and starts speaking French, the Parisian will get confused and respond in English if they know it.

"As for talented potential employees… that’s tougher" No kidding. What Montreal has going is pretty impressive, but Quebec has an abnormally high personal income tax rate and the language issue is always going to hang like a cloud over it.

In the tech world, if blocking social networks means your employees can't access social networks, it means you've hired the wrong employees.

True, but I draw a large distinction between 'the valley' and SF. SF was an hour and a half away in traffic from my employer, and I don't want to spend 3 hours a day of my life commuting.

I find that mentality interesting. Personally, I spent a short time in the valley in my very early 20's (internship) and found it so boring outside of work that I knew I didn't want to spend the rest of my 20's there. I did see how if one

Doesn't that limit you to potential employees who aren't currently employed? And what percentage of people do you "drop"? I imagine once you spend a week with someone you might get attached to them enough that it would be hard to let them

Or perhaps RIM wanted this to happen so thousands upon thousands of techies would view their careers page in a simple viral scheme. Though, were I to place a bet on what happened, I would put my money on your scenario. I doubt RIM unintent

Did you find that you needed fewer after the upgrade? I'm in the middle of moving my 2.3.5 app to 3.0.3 and am finding that there are fewer plugins as some are now part of rails or made redundant; jrails and subdomain-fu come to mind.

To say nothing of the fact that if one graduates with a large student debt, taking below market salary on the small chance that you might break even on employee stock options is irrational unto itself.

I find the whole "polluting French" absolutely hilarious in a historical context given that English was Germanic before it was "polluted" by French at the tip of a spear. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_conquest_of_England
