Every time these kind of submissions come around, I feel it necessary to give a shoutout to Jamis Buck's great series of blog posts and examples on the topic: http://www.jamisbuck.org/mazes/ Part of my undergradua

This obviously comes down to personal preference but I personally prefer the explicit conversions for the added clarity.

This is true - I love Scala for its hybrid nature. I'm just saying that I wish prominent members of its community would too. For example if you go on to the #scala IRC channel half the regulars on their will be complaining about how te

I agree that when, in the process of learning Scala, you get beyond the "better Java" stage the interop can feel frustrating. On the other hand Scala gains so much from it. Its a huge net-positive IMHO. As long as you are only b

Out of interest - are you talking about the use of symbolic operators? Or something else (like the prevalence of the Typeclass pattern)?

One reason I would love to see this succeed which has almost nothing to do with the particulars of the Frege project itself is the effect it would have on the Scala community. There is a significant portion of the Scala community which desp

This guy doesn't really understand what "All else being equal" implies. The phrase has a very specific meaning in statistics. Any one of us can think of counter-examples where a company which was late to a market ended up dom

Any country can do it. It comes down to an issue of investor trust, which you only earn through a good track record.

Haha - I hadn't even considered this. So yeah - the cost of childcare is largely not going to overlap with the cost of private education (where that private education includes accomodation of course).

Absolutely! For a start 17 students each year are fully funded. Then there are 25 additional fully funded scholariship students are taken on at the beginning of the penultimate year (called 6th form year in the UK). Added to these are are l

I should also chime in and say that even for people living in London and sending their children to private schools these estimates are very high. I was luck enough to go to Eton and honestly, for most parents it was a question of affording

It's been a while since I've done work in this area but you might want to lookup Lanzcos Algorithm [1]. [1]: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lanczos_algorithm

I think your question suggests an unfair representation of the request. A desire to hear both sides of the story is just that. The question would be just as valid in a opposite scenario.

I'm genuinely shocked by this. I'm all for free market mechanisms but come on ... a system without strong employee protection must be naturally prone to abuse.

There is lots of interesting information in this thread, with several references to a "Fire fast" culture becoming more common amongst tech companies. As a UK citizen, I have to ask: Are the employment laws a lot weaker in the US?

Are you suggesting that parsing capability should be part of a languages standard library, or just that it is useful to have good open source libraries available for the purpose? Anecdotally, my experience with Scala's parser combinato

I have to say - for parsers I really like the scala library parboiled2 ( http://git.io/xpg3 ). Its DSL for defining PEGs is very intuitive and should be easy to pick up for anyone. Its also supposed to be pretty performan

Its not necessarily just about the quantity of data. What you want to do with the data (the queries you want to run) should play an important role in deciding your database. For example: a query workload with lots of deep traversals would
