What's all this "sign with your finger" nonsense? With Chip & PIN cards (i.e., all our modern credit cards) you should just need the chip & PIN. Signatures are only a backup authentication. Also, signing with anything other than a p

I think the issue is that these posts are interesting, do gather votes but are kicked off the front page anyway.

I'm sick of good/interesting posts disappearing of the the frontpage. It's not just a case of them gradually falling, but more like going from the front page to 300+ in the space of minutes. It's a shame. I used to like the HN content.

I don't worry about Google (the search engine product) or Gmail because they're core products of profitable company. I don't worry about Facebook because I wish it would die (but it's also making money — enough? Maybe/maybe not). I do wor

As a long-time ReadItLater user, I'm not too impressed with the "Pocket" rebranding ("Read It Later" made it obvious what it did) but the new iOS app solves most of the issues I had with it (it auto-resolve bit.ly links, pulls in titles eve

I found the UI very pretty (I had to check it wasn't Flash) but a bit confusing and limited: - Only shows 3 flow destinations at a time (and I nearly missed the scroll buttons) - Had to mouseover to get percentages. I don't know why why per

yes, Scotland is definitely wetter though the rainfall in most of Ireland is much more like 750-1250mm [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_of_Ireland#Rainfall ] And in general terms, Ireland has less extreme weather than the England: it'

You can mostly ignore the media if you're in the tech industry because there's basically two economies here: one is fecked and the other is the tech industry, with tons of open positions. Re. the weather: yeah, it rains. And when it doesn't

I've avoided all conferences and work trips to the U.S. since 2003. Next year my wife's cousin is getting married in NY and I really don't want to go -- purely because of the hostile airport security It's generally not about the practical i

How does a 1mm x 1mm chip actually get used? I'm guessing that the actual package would have to be much bigger to enable mounting on a board?

I bought it, read it and it gave me huge insights into our own product which contains a scripting language (not an area I usually work on). My degree didn't include a compiler course (or perhaps it was optional and I did NLP instead). The b

Does anyone else see this as a YC/VC-success but a business-failure? I'd be far more impressed if they grew Posterous into a profitable company. And so this team is moving from one unprofitable company to another. Disappointing :(

I'm truly puzzled by the notion that a CRM-for-prospective-investors should be more important to a business^ than a CRM-for-customers ^ yeah, I'm old-school and still think startups should be businesses first and foremost

Since late October (end of previous release) I've been mostly doing make-work: test scripts, some individual investigation, reading up on standards. Why? Because upper management haven't decided what is going into the next release. I've fin

Every Node-newbie should read and understand the chapter on Control Flows ( http://book.mixu.net/ch7.html ), particularly the async for loop. This tripped me up with my little node app ( http://urlpipe.com ) before I refactored it to use re
