We are getting there - the Windows one was fading too early at night, so we had to get the schedule right first. The new schedule is a big deal, and we can build a lot from it.

We recovered an actual stolen camera this way. But it really only worked because the buyer used Flickr, and otherwise this kind of metadata is pretty hidden.

Yes, you can stream JPEG pretty easily as long as you know the output size. Also to combine JPEGs into a sprite, you can avoid all DCT/iDCT/color operations and use only the Huffman portion of the codec (decode, concat, encode). S

Mostly you shouldn't have to hide backend latency by reordering, and if you don't reorder, you can just use JPEG image strips/sprites, which don't need double compression. JPEGs also stream, but in an order determined by

Just a few years ago, this was different: devices would listen for the SSID broadcast every few seconds. But that's too power-intensive for phones, because they have to leave the wifi radio on for very long amounts of time. Now instead

If data like this requires a bureaucracy to generate, you might be able to protect it with a bureaucracy. If it's collected automatically and stored in one place, it is considerably harder to protect.

The Crucial M4 had no power-loss protection. The newer model (M500) does and would be a more interesting test.

Microsoft made it way too hard to upgrade out of XP (unless you updated through Vista.) It is no wonder everyone is still on XP. It would light the PC industry on fire if they made it one click to move your stuff to another machine. You can

I got bit by being really productive in VC6 like 10 years ago. Had a script to clone a template dsw/dsp file, which make a new one, so I have about 400 projects like that, for little experiments, little projects. Upgrading each of thes

Modified the text to say, yes, this is our Windows update. Many of the features are on Mac already, since we've done a dozen updates for it in the interim. But we're planning another Mac update soon.

Some notes-- When we recompiled for 64-bit/universal (from 32-bit before), f.lux's RAM usage went from 6MB to 29MB (but Apple requested that we change it, so we did.) You could probably set f.lux to run in 32-bit mode and have the

This proposal is too aggressive at deprecating ciphers that are the only option for some browsers (e.g., IE8). It would be useful to add an icon to the address bar that indicates the security level of the crypto used (PFS or not, etc.)

Yes, but you can usefully protect point-to-point communications using Diffie-Hellman or similar. You can't if you know someone is decrypting in the middle, even if they are using a common symmetric key that can be recovered by subpoena

I read about LPRs a while ago, and since then I've noticed the cameras everywhere , all over LA. They are so much more prevalent than you think. The hardware is cheap enough ($1000/camera) that there's no purely financial re

This is also why the "unbundling" of Windows turned out so badly for consumers. Not having a decent mail app or video/photos app by default (like the Mac) means people have to navigate this crap to get the most basic things done. We (f.lux)
