I don't like this suggestion of "best practice" without any numbers. Progressive JPEG uses more RAM (because you can stream normal JPEGs so you only have to buffer a row of JPEG blocks) and lots more CPU (up to 3x). Most of the compression

If you insert a big image into the DOM, MobileSafari locks up for quite a few frames (whether or not it's preloaded.) Sencha's implementation just swaps pictures when you're not doing anything else! But most native apps can update photos wh

Bill Gates makes the argument that energy storage is way behind. If you used all the batteries currently in existence you would only have minutes of energy, not enough to make it through the night.

HN is already over-optimized for good headlines. Voting up after clicking is harder to implement but would improve quality.

Microsoft loses developers by ignoring the installed base. XP held up WPF adoption, and Win7 will hold up WinRT. That's assuming anybody enjoys using it. It's still easier to ship on Win32 and not worry about these fragmented versions of th

I've used tc on my openwrt (Linksys!) firewall for years. A network genius friend helped set it up. Why are there no consumer firewalls with great defaults for this? How fantastic in the era of cloud storage and network backup to have long-

I think this is the penalty we pay for the advice from two years ago: "Buy all your developers SSDs. It makes them more productive."

I got this one for $16 (no enclosure for your old CD-ROM like the $80 one): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0058AH2US/ref=oh_details_o... Left some big files on the old HD, and symlinked them. The disk stays idle in the CD bay until I n

Photoshop upgrades usually cost <$200, and most people I know skip versions. I think at best Adobe has shipped a version each 18mo (sometimes 2 years). So Photoshop "upgraders" have paid $10/mo in the past, and this is just $5 if you sk

oops, thought it might fetch all at once...a separate round trip wouldn't make sense. (Granted, you're maybe doing a smaller hop to local DNS than to overseas SSL.)

Why not a DNS TXT record to enable? The TLS method seems so much more complicated.

This seems to be the case with lots of software now. e.g., I can't run Thunderbird 3 on a machine without SSD.

IE has had an icon-less tab forever. But it is connected to the tab bar, which makes more sense. I thought this was a bug, too.

Has anyone measured the "write amplification" rate of LevelDB? I have noticed small writes cause lots of disk writes (which is an issue on SSD) but haven't measured it with actual numbers yet.

This was a really common tactic at Microsoft back in the 90s, which is probably why Joel is familiar with it. It worked on me--I took an internship with MSFT instead of Apple, because Microsoft gave me under a week to respond, and the recru

Cyanogenmod has incorporated Jeff Sharkey's "surfaceflinger" patch to make the compositor do a tint all the time. I have a private boot ROM that fully implements f.lux, but it's impossible to ship that way...trying to get Google to incorpor

Also, I had found the hardware registers through some hacking, so I asked Jay how to write to kernel memory...he pointed out that Apple had added this API as a PrivateFramework already.

"Get" gamma ramp calls simply don't work on 2g/3g devices, so we have to ignore Apple's calibration and just use the native display gamma. Apple is using decent backlights on these, so it doesn't look terrible and this is now in the 0.93 bu

It sounds to me like the scarce resource was found to be RAM, not CPU. If an "instance" uses a big piece of RAM to serve a request, and doesn't give it up while waiting for a backend, then scalability is RAM-bound, not CPU-bound, and they s

Seriously, the benchmark says it's 590 times faster than regular python. So it's probably 59 times slower than optimized SIMD code?
