Indeed, but widespread discontent seems to be an important risk factor for that outcome, isn’t it? My understanding of history is limited, but this I know; History is always messy, and you can never identify just one single reason for the w

That is all true, as far as I know, but then the question is why did they succeed, if not by exploiting widespread discontent in the general population?

True. However, they seem to be working hard – and with some success, I believe – at transferring ownership and responsibility to their partners in Ghana.

I satisfy my chocolate cravings with chocolate from fairafric now. Chocolate produced all the way from the tree to packaged chocolate bars in Ghana. They ran a couple kickstarter projects to get going. It's excellent chocolate too! At

The usual remedy for such ills is to add more search terms. Try "typesetting", for example.

What – you did not enjoy reading the 1200+ page manual? But yes, I know what you mean. I use the cargo cult method for writing TikZ code myself. Look for examples of people doing something similar, then poke at the code until it does what I

As far as I know, this year's Gödel prize is not yet awarded. The current story is about the Abel prize.

They share the prize “for their foundational contributions to theoretical computer science and discrete mathematics, and their leading role in shaping them into central fields of modern mathematics”.

Our hospital here in Trondheim, Norway did mass vaccinate about one-third of their employees in one day (Astra-Zeneca, I believe). In the next couple of days, the number on sick leave was nearly high enough to be a serious problem. They hav

I am pretty sure they were not all in one elderly home. In a brief look at the BMJ paper I did not see that claim, and besides I think such a dramatic incident would have made a much bigger splash in the news.

You do have some valid points, but presently we seem to be talking past each other, so I think I'll let the matter drop for now. But thanks for giving me something to mull over.

You put your finger at an important point there. When applied to a single policy, labels can indeed get in the way of reasoned discussion of the policy. I think the labels are more useful as applied to the entirety of someone's politic

As Karunamon said in a sibling comment, labels facilitate reasoning. Yes, labels have their inherent risks, especially such vague labels as left and right (as applied to politics). But we live in an age of political parties. It seems we can

On the contrary, I find the left/right spectrum a useful, if rather rough, guide to the landscape og political opinions. But of course, the devil is in the details, and you ignore them at your peril. I consider myself sort of left lean

In Norway, the current standard is dd.mm.yy. Before computers, it was d/m-yy (no leading zeroes). I come across yyyy-mm-dd once in a while, but it is sort of rare.

Even that is an approximation: The hue is piecewise linear instead of using trigonometric functions. Linear, that is, in each 60° sector. (Or affine for the super pedantic.)

Not for me. (I own a Kia Soul, electric.) Many owners use a similar feature to get their car to warm up at a specific time, though. I haven’t used it myself, though, being too disorganized to know ahead of time when I want to use the car. B

Also the “sqlar” archive format. I’ve known about it for a while, but that it is now built into the regular command shell was news to me. I’ll want to see if I can get sqlarfs to work with macFUSE next.

That is pretty much the case in Norway, too. You don’t even need to say yes. Silence is taken as assent. But if you do need to go beyond that, it is just like GP wrote.
