Your point has changed at least twice in this thread. My point was simply that "monopoly" is not an accurate term here. You can't say "oligopoly may be more accurate, so I've been correct."

I've just come across the statistic before. Here's a quick search hit, saying e-commerce as of a year and a bit ago that indicates 35% of e-commerce. https://www.ben-evans.com/benedictevans/2019/12/a

Fun fact: Amazon is <10% of retail in the US, and lower globally. I don't really have much to disagree with you about, but maybe you want to check the "monopoly" claim.

This still isn't a complete solution, or at the very least holds non-obvious implications. Specifically, date math is not commutative[0]. And, yes, Postgres or java.time might force any arbitrarily ordered expression to always evalua

Don't forget that calendar math is not commutative! Jan 27 + 5 days = Feb 1 Feb 1 + 1 month = Mar 1 Jan 27 + 1 month = Feb 27 Feb 27 + 5 days = Mar 4 (or Mar 3 in a leap year!) Therefore... Jan 27 + 5 days

Note that HN doesn't support markdown, but does have its own limited markup. Specifically, backticks are simply displayed, rather than marking a code snippet or block. You can indent by four spaces for a code block as below: This

A year is not nearly enough time to spin up a new fab. It is impossible to say with any certainty that TSMC did not respond correctly to a variable that has been known for only a year.

Yes. I didn't say that this wouldn't happen. I just observed that none of the three players among AMD, Nvidia, and Intel have an active interest in working together. Practicality will trump, but I suspect that given a choice among

It is unlikely that Nvidia and AMD will want to use Intel as their foundry. It is unlikely that Intel would be willing to offer pricing compelling enough to entice those two to use their foundries. So long as TSMC and Samsung remain competi

Whether they compete on cutting edge nodes is irrelevant to whether they compete . My comment was explicitly in response to the idea of a TSMC foundry monopoly. It's certainly valuable to understand the specific nature of their comp

Intel has proven for the last 4 or so years that a mature 14nm node can be competitive with <=10nm nodes. Progress in chip manufacturing doesn't happen exclusively at the node size of the cutting edge. As the manufacturing technolog

There is enough hireable talent. Samsung is producing 8nm at volume, and TSMC 7nm, with Apple reserving all of the upcoming 5nm. Clearly the talent is there to support multiple cutting edge nodes developed in parallel. Whether Intel could a
