I'm a bioinformatician, but haven't really pondered doing this on my own DNA too much. Wouldn't be terribly complicated to sequence and analyse your entire genome though. Provided you could purify your DNA, sequencing wouldn

Wondering if this is snake oil sold to a small unsuspecting regional city in Queensland, or the pattern- and behavior-recognition colossus the laughably-named iOmniscient company makes it out to be. http://www.iomniscient.com

I'm still trying to work out whether only dual channel RAM means 64GB RAM is the limit, or do different mobo chipsets support actually support quad-channel? Kind of a deal breaker (for bioinformatics work) if I can't go over 100G

In a perfect world where food distribution isn't affected by things like spoilage, lack of transport infrastructure, politics, trade barriers, diversion of food crops to biofuels, monopolies, war etc. etc., we may have an oversupply.

5-8C would lead to mass starvation. Our agricultural systems are built on extremely well adapted crop varieties for the regions they grow in. The lead-in time for generation of new crop varieties is very long (even with genetic modificatio

Don't need a xeon for more than 64GB of ram. I have a 5820K with 128 GB ram on an X99 mobo. Runs very well for it's price, though a little power hungry.

My Seiko SARY57 mechanical (automatic) watch. Beautifully made, looks great, does what it's supposed to do, not too expensive. Simply can't ask for more design-wise in my opinion. https://www.amazon.com/PRESAGE-me

I'm seeing significant performance increases in my app (small RNA aligner). Haven't profiled yet, so not sure where the gains are coming from, but happy all the same.

Like a lot of other tech-obsessed people, I jumped on the Apple Watch bandwagon when it hit the market, having not worn a watch since my teen years. After about 6 months, I ditched it due to it being a bit useless at actually telling the t

We had 'core' promises and 'non-core' promises here in Australia. How politicians use language is quite instructive.

Have to agree with this; I recently went on a big distro downloading binge, as I was sure I was missing out on something that was more modern, shinier, and had sexy features I didn't know I needed 'till I tried them. I ended up de

I agree - we're a long long way off being able to accurately predict the impacts of genetic changes, particularly given effects like pleiotrophy. We still don't even really understand why a tiny worm with around 1000 cells (C. ele

I don't know about too many others in the bioinformatics field, but I reckon I write about 80% of my code in Python and 20% in R. R for stats and plotting; Python for wrangling data. Having said that, they're the languages I lea
