It seemed clear they were making moves in this direction back when their announcement about on device hash checking for CSAM prior to iCloud photos backup was made. That announcement only made sense in a world where they wanted to enable en

I think he’s referencing Asimov’s profession novella there, though the main point of that story was that the protagonist couldn’t get the tapes because of the capability for original thought (some people had to make the tapes). And yeah, pr

It makes me think a bit of Asimov’s novella Profession: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Profession_(novella) Currently, we (mostly) still need people to make the tapes. That probably won’t be true forever, but it is f

This is basically my take - I'm mostly confused by the people up in arms about this (except that it likely makes their work more of a commodity, so I get that fear). People look at art and make art in that style all the time, now a mac

If the reason stated at the end of the article is the reason I can also understand their decision. If my SO was surreptitiously taking nude pictures (videos?) of me and our kid while we were sleeping (and uploading them to the cloud!), I’d

IIRC there was a follow up which was arguably worse. Google implied that the account was suspended because of real CSAM concerns unrelated to the photos sent to the doctor/police officer (other photos in their account? they wouldn'

Scott Forstall also talks about this: https://youtu.be/F3Pl8GmKtW8 Basically part of the reason Apple went with AT&T was they were the only carrier willing to let them control the user/feature layer of the stack. T

The Tesla one is better than using your phone - which is a high bar (and kind of the point I'm trying to make). The display is big, the maps are google maps, it has traffic routing, it can route you via super chargers, etc.

I have a Model 3, previously had a Fiat 500e, VW GTI, and Saturn. I’ve driven other high end cars and their systems are way harder to use imo. It’s worth just trying yourself vs. listening to people on HN. Most people don’t bother with thei

The chargers and the heads up display/software nav independent of FSD place them far ahead of anyone else. People complain a lot on HN about the touchscreen but it’s really good and most car systems are really bad. That and their range

I think there is an idealistic vision behind Twitter that’s poorly articulated - Jack Dorsey definitely had one. There’s something to a platform with strong speech protections that tries to give publication access to everyone in the world.

The median HN user isn’t that bright and this topic in particular is one where the noise is such that the comments here are atypically bad. The outliers are great and make this site worth it, but on some topics (of which crypto is one) they

I don’t really agree with this. A wild eyed Luna type can lose a lot of people’s money and is probably more likely to do so than a skeptical trader making deals. The issue with this wasn’t that general heuristic which is still true (imo), i

The advantage of crypto and DeFi is that it’s possible to have everything be 100% transparent and visible on chain. It’s also possible for users to self custody funds which avoids this issue entirely. Exchange failure is mostly an independe

There are lots of dumb HN comments on any cryptocurrency related topic. Most of them don't know what they're talking about. It's one of the topics where engagement here isn't worthwhile imo. The FTX story is interesting
