This is not an issue at all. Helium is inert and relatively cheap. Filling the device with a couple hundred liters will cost a few Euros.

This is a common misconception. Helium and hydrogen leaking into ultra-high vacuum systems is a problem since even trace amounts spoil the vacuum. The leakage out of a storage vessel is completely negligible.

30 bar is not a lot. A SodaStream CO2 cylinder has twice that at room temperature [1]. The pressure inside your air conditioner is probably not much lower either. I would be very surprised if a 30 bar vessel for an inert gas required routin

Pipenv has pyenv integration. It just doesn't work with python 3.6 on my machine. My guess is that it tries running pipenv itself with the old interpreter and is no longer compatible. In any case, faffing around with 25 different third

I started a project in 2016 and used pipenv to freeze all the dependencies. A few weeks ago, I could not get it working on a new machine. Apparently the new system python broke some of the libraries. I had also pinned the python version in

This is a very uncritical article that basically relies on marketing material of two companies (POLARISqb and SavantX). Most people in the QC field are extremely sceptical about D-Wave, since there is no conclusive demonstration that their

In Europe, banks, police, and courts do understand account takeovers. They have roughly the same consequences (a lot of faffing around with the bank), but are much harder to pull off than check fraud. I really don't see a downside.

This is a very American perspective. The rest of the world has used bank transfers for decades, and the risk is very well understood. Online banking usually requires 2FA via a phone app, or using the bank card with a separate reader. 2FA vi

I don't think that this is a very good application for the technology. Compared to lithium batteries, synthetic fuels have much higher energy density, but much lower energy efficiency. Modern EVs achieve plenty of range, charge quickly

Still it means that other more useful research will likely not get funded by congress. These big hype projects can do a lot of harm for everyone else.

Usually governments have some kind of plan how much they want to spend on science. A big, but ultimately useless project can kill the funding for a lot of other research.

Not surprising, since Nvidia is famous for terrible Linux support. I couldn't get scaling to work on my desktop with an Nvidia GPU, but my T-series Thinkpad (AMD CPU and GPU) works perfectly fine. In fact, sleep works better than on

Quite impressive that a hobbyist got his hands on two working active hydrogen masers. These are still by far the best commercially available frequency standards and cost a few hundred thousand dollar each.

Blackouts happen if the power lines themselves get damaged. But rationing and rolling blackouts due to insufficient capacity are basically unheard-of.

I find it fascinating that this is considered some kind of doomsday scenario in Europe, but happens regularly in the US. Different priorities, I guess.

What a terrible article. This kind of snarky drivel adds nothing to the discussion. I don't understand why such obvious flame bait gets voted to the front page of HN.

You don't know what would have happened without the ice. Believing in anecdotes instead of studies leads to bloodletting and homeopathy.

I wouldn't be surprised if that assumption turns out to be wrong. A lot of medical procedures seem to have little or no empirical backing. Apparently there are not many incentives to do high-quality studies in the field.

Then there must be something badly wrong with the protocol and/or implementations. Negotiating a few bits over a high-quality cable link should be instantaneous.

In Europe, kWh is used for both your heating bill and your electricity bill. Since kWh and Joule are two different units for the exact same physical quantity, they can be used interchangeably.

A standard European 400 kV power line can transmit more than 1 GW over hundreds of kilometers. Upgrading the grid will not be cheap, but the required technology has been well established for over a century.

You are cherry-picking one particular example. The neutrino and the planet Neptune were "dark matter" for decades until better detectors became available.

This factoid about coal power plants is often repeated, but I have my doubts about the accuracy. It seems to be based on a 44 year old paper [1] which comes to the conclusion that the radiation dose you get from living near a coal plant is

The EUAs for BioNTech/Pfizer and for Moderna were approved on December 10th and 17th 2020, respectively. By the beginning of April 2021, the US had fully vaccinated well over a hundred million people. Obviously the CDC had tons of data
