The CDC director referred to their own epidemiological data which (at the time) showed a clear reduction in transmission due to the vaccination. Clinical trials are generally unsuitable for measuring transmission, since the rate of particip

Note that this statement predates the emergence of immune escape variants. The CDC director was right at the time.

Attacking an electronic voting system requires changing a few integers. Surely this is much easier than stuffing ballot boxes all over the country. In functioning democracies, the polls have observers from multiple parties which makes ballo

I find it extremely concerning that they mix e-government and electronic voting. The former is obviously a good idea, while the latter is an existential threat to democracy. Estonian citizens can now no longer audit the validity of their el

In my opinion, the axes labels are way too small and in a weird location, the lines are too thin, and the default color cycle has many colors that are indistinguishable for people with red–green color blindness (8% of all men). I have been

I agree that Mathematica is extremely powerful, but in my opinion calling it polished is quite a stretch. The notebook interface has a look and feel as if it was hacked together in two weeks in 2004. Kernel startup and function evaluations

If your live USB image is from this decade, it will almost certainly come with journald for reading the logs. If it doesn't, why choose such a bad live USB image?

The difference is around a factor of two between the US Southwest deserts and the German north sea coast [1]. So tracking installed peak capacity is not an ideal metric, but it is very simple and gets the order of magnitude right. [1] http

The IEA is using the correct unit. They are talking about "annual solar PV capacity additions" which is measured in Watts.

It's incredible that the only sensible comments on this thread are this far down. The HN audience really has a massive Dunning-Kruger problem when it comes to science topics (especially true for COVID conspiracy theories).

The energy levels of individual atoms have been compared at the level of a few parts in 1E18 in optical atomic clocks. If properties of the protons making up the nuclei of these atoms (mass, charge,...) were different at that level, it woul

The Fukushima disaster cleanup cost a trillion dollars. Over a hundred thousand people were (at least temporarily) displaced. I would call this a pretty darn big failure.

The Fukushima reactors and a lot of the german ones were built by the same company. They overlooked the flood risk on the japanese coast (which has huge tsunamis every few decades). What did they overlook elsewhere? After Chernobyl, politic

Obviously the variants make the situation much more complicated, that's why I cited the overview page of the CDC. Please don't cherry-pick the lowest figure you could find, this is highly misleading. Even for adolescents and Omicr

How often are you going to repeat this nonsense? Vaccines have (with rare exceptions) never been 100% effective at preventing infection. Efficacy figures are given in the information sheets for all commercial vaccines.

According to IAEA data, there is considerably more minable coal than uranium on earth (by extractible energy). Current nuclear reactors are not scalable to global energy requirements.

I once looked up the numbers. Chernobyl alone released more radioactive material (by activity) than the radioactive content of all fossil fuel that was ever burned.

It amazes me that crypto-fanboys simply refuse to think through the failure modes of their toy projects. If you put your domains or your money on the blockchain, and you lose your keys, your domains or your money are gone with no recourse.

Small IEC mopeds are hideously inefficient. They consume merely 2 or 3 times less fuel than a modern IEC car, despite being an order of magnitude lighter and much slower. Also they emit way more pollutants and are extremely noisy.
