I mean, people aren't really keeping up with the top posts 3 weeks ago on HN, reddit, or twitter. That's why reposts are so common. The first two are easily indexed by google, so that's one advantage. Twitter has a site-wide

I'm not really surprised. Every time there's an unregulated market with the potential for loads of cash, people rush in to scrape up every cent before either it gets regulated or everyone else runs out with the money.

Self-driving cars have been postponed indefinitely. I don't trust his companies with human brain implants before they can get cars to reliably drive accident-free.

I'm always fearful of posting my tech nightmares on HN because so many people here work in industries that exist just to fry brains with ads. Probably most are rolling their eyes saying "We're not that evil." But somebod

Apparently about 80% of sexually active people have some form of HPV. Even when people think they don't have it, it's quite probable they do. Statistically speaking, more than a couple people in these comments have some form of it

“Tanked” according to economists. If the news weren’t telling us the economy tanked, nobody would be worried. Houses are affordable, jobs are everywhere, people aren’t going into lifelong debt because of medical issues. In countries with in

Japan says its economy has been in deflation since the 90s.[1] Everybody is working. Sure, the numbers aren't going up and there aren't constant booms of new companies being valued at 100 billion and exploding (which draws ire fro

Japan is said to be deflationary (until covid at least) and lacks an unemployment problem.

Yeah, deflation is awful. Imagine our continuously increased production and efficiency resulting in goods becoming cheaper and the value of the working person’s dollar going farther. Horrifying.

To be fair to Forbes, the media was all over her as a female Steve Jobs and declaring it the beginning of the girl boss era. A lot of people who criticized her were shut down as being sexist.

Wild to me that data showing men are facing objective decline is called a win, just because the gender gap is smaller (or speeding in the opposite direction as before, with regards to college entrance rates) due to the situation being worse

Outside of HN, social media is absolutely flooded with it. Reddit is particularly awful. There's a set few countries where if you post anything not explicitly negative about them, people come out of the wood works to post a few set phr

Yeah, just like anyone who openly mentions they worked for Facebook should ever be trusted under any circumstances. And we all know what "cybersecurity" means after a stint with that company. This is a dumb game to play. Absolute

It’s probably because saying anything positive about (forbidden country) gets you permanently labeled a CCP drone. May as well add “couldn’t help but notice you say Chinese people are just like people anywhere else. Curious.”

It’d be nice if people actually focused on the artificial island making or Taiwan’s independence, but “activists” (I’m not sure if that’s even the proper word in this instance) aren’t really concerned about that and most people don’t even k

How does DNA half-life factor into cells and seeds that last thousands of years and are still viable? [1] I assume seed cells probably aren’t dividing, but I guess maybe they could be using energy and slowly reproducing? And apparently bact

Many places let you choose your energy provider. People choose the cheapest ones. So yes, they're at fault. It's like crying about slaves making chocolate but paying for the cheapest chocolate bar instead of opting for more expens

But people sure do want cheap fuel and electricity. Cheapness comes at a cost, and people consistently choose the cheapest providers when given a choice. Absolving ourselves is responsibility is why progress has stalled for decades.

No need to be so angry. I said people can’t just choose to make 250k, unlike privileged folks here. No need to rage about the reality. I was paying far more than 1200 for a spot in Portland a good 30+ minutes from downtown. A friend was pay

Cool. Most people aren't given a life that allows them to just make 250k if they want to. As a programmer, tech workers are the laziest people around but incredibly overpaid. The people making 1/4 your pay are busting their asses

Averages lean upwards due to some people making millions. Federal taxes aren't the only taxes. State and other taxes are factored in. Rent may average at $1100 in an ideal world, but near cities, $1100 is increasingly rare. Every time

I lived in the second gayest city in America for a good while and I wasn’t walking in on gay orgies. I don’t recall a single instance of gay public affection despite being outside often, but I also don’t recall any straight instances either
