Cumulus is dead. Mellanox only bought it because there wasn't much else. I another 2-3 years it will be as relevant as Vyatta.

Reality is a notebook in the attic, if found, will at least get a few minutes interest. Only the crazy narcissists think anyone is going to care about their curated babble once they're gone.

China has fishing fleets all over the world, and the pacific coast of south and central America in particular: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2022/09/26/world/asia/ch... .

By reputation, Jensen doesn't really have much in the way of SW understanding, and in that sense he is like a lot of former chip guys. They got _insanely_ lucky that CUDA took off and there's an amazing irony in SW being their pri

They barely exist in the network switch market. The new NVLink switches may change that for tier one inter-chassis transport to replace Infiniband RDMA, though. Reality is Mellanox has never been a substantial networking player. Yes, in HPC

We need to keep hearing about it because more than half the global population is in denial about it and we are not doing much to prevent it while preventable catastrophe looms.

Under confidence is extremely rare in new and inexperienced coders. For me, what really boosted my confidence long term was getting yelled at by people who actually knew what they were doing because I sure didn’t. But that ended up being mo

Strong agreement. What we have right now is a lot of people doing light glue code and pretending it is engineering.

Not only are they 1000x slower than memory, if you bump into thermal management, much slower than that. Worse, if you run into wear leveling write amplification, orders of magnitude slower. Yes, you can use caching to hide this, in main me

Any free space optical approach you can imagine will be slower and noisier than the equivalent technology in a fiber. You are not going to get DWDM channel density in free space or throughput. This is not real.

Current generation 12 slot chassis with 51.2Tbps per slot is 612Tbps per chassis, and so a pair is 1228Tbps which is roughly your estimate. Companies like Juniper and Cisco sell tens of thousands of the previous generation per year _today_.

The article is 100% rubbish. Just complete trash. Each submarine cable is 12+ strands which are DWDM multiplexed to 20-40 channels at 100-400gbps. The entire _planned_ starlink constellation has less aggregate switching capacity than a pair

I think that’s right. In practice it just took time for memory to increase a bit and for statistical input methods to show up. Certainly actively bad writing systems delayed IT adoption. In fact, famously, the underlying theory of the Fifth

There's a reason that men succeed at suicide a lot more frequently than women. Help is often not an option. In his excellent review [1] of Nostalgia Critic's idiotic, embarrassing and awful review of The Wall, Dan Olson points out

Apple doesn't even tell you the clockspeed of their CPUs in their products. This is utterly not out of character at all. The only reason they talk about all the stuff in the M2 ultra is because they are beating up on Windows laptops.

Extended time fixed focus creates eyestrain. In a monitor environment, people look up, they look around, they look elsewhere, and so on, and even so monitors cause eye strain. This is not a controversial take. Yes, there are tech bros who w
