Two simple practical benefits: (1) Performance for first page load. (2) SEO. Also because of network latency sometimes it's faster to just reload the whole page than to send a few async requests and wait for them to return while the us

I think the internet really exacerbates the problem though. It's one thing if PowerPoint animations don't work well on an old computer, but with network requests it's like people don't even realize that something that ha

The thing is that batteries are usually stateless (is there power or not?) whereas if you're handling offline vs online mode you are going to have to sync changes and that's a mind#!%$. You know the line about the two hard problem

Between this article, the recent front page article on contrast[1], and something I've written recently (about missing loading indicators) [2], it seems the common feature is that developers are losing empathy for end users. Our device

Good article. It's true that tech in general may be facing challenges because smartphones are not new anymore, but I was especially annoyed at the On-Demand bubble from last year, which felt to me like a "fake startup" trend.

I kinda like that if I spin up a new Google Compute Engine I jump into a shell just by clicking a button in the browser v.s. struggling to configure SSH public keys and wondering why I got an error on login etc.

Trust me, although I've written a tutorial about this[1], it's not that straightforward to do for a live site :) To put it another way, making the same app work with and without JS isn't made much easier even if you use React

Right. I'm not comfortable with this idea of big data being dependent on the actual file size of the data. There really are problems where doing stuff like reading files or using a relational database break down and you need something

The trade-off isn't about the dangers of not refactoring v.s. refactoring. The trade-off is about time plus the aspect this article hammers, which is lack of knowledge about the future--i.e. if you made a multi-purpose multi-client fra

I like this part: “Duplication is sometimes essential for the right abstraction. Because only when we see many parts of the system share “similar” code, a better shared abstraction emerges. The Quality of Abstraction is in the weakest link.

Like if you have an error saying "no results for this book title", you'd have logic that sends JSON and checks that, and on the server side you'd need logic that checks the POST request and checks that (and there'd

It's useful for views, I've done it with React. But yes more for demo apps than in production, at some point things break down because you can't write both server-side and client-side code handling for every UI state.

While I think the idea has merit, I think people are 'cooling' on AMP because it causes weirdness like the URL being hosted by google (??) and the original URL being hard to share, etc. They have to encourage browsers or publisher

Regarding the original piece, I felt it's a mistake for the writer to go, 'well I used the timeline years ago and the timeline looks the same in 2016.' They built out a major advertising and metrics system in the meantime tha

But working on a blogging engine (producing feeds) or saying parsing libraries will handle it is just externalizing the problems with RSS to the consumers. That's where the real pain point is: understanding the content of an RSS feed,

Atom is just a more precise and accurate protocol. For example, timestamps in RSS feeds come in all shapes and sizes, whereas Atom has an unambiguous time format. I would want to validate the product before I start messing around with this

That's very naive given the specification in question. Atom was an effort to do this. The process created years of strife. And after all this drama, Facebook took over and RSS/Atom/et al became irrelevant.

Yeah it would be nice if social networks had a 'lockdown' button so all your public stuff can be hidden mid-controversy or if you were a target of harassment and/or otherwise inquisitive folks. The real question is, how did h
