It's more a question of who I block. Sometimes I have IRL friends who sign up for twitter and have no tweets yet. If I see that they also have 10000 people they are following, I don't waste time figuring out if I know them.

NO! Follower count is the only way to recognize spam/junk accounts. If someone follows 10k people and has 4 followers... obvious spam account.

You could make the case that this is already embedded in the equation - a great employee #4 would add way more value than an equally great employee #35, since they will have more influence over the direction, will write a higher percentage

Up is an amazing film. It's funny, endearing, classic, and artistically excellent. The film breaks out of the mold of 3D animated film art direction with stylized characters and it prefers graphic shapes over the hyper-realism so common in

The article basically argues that they didn't "cave" - instead they made a rational choice to write contracts that were detrimental to the long-term viability of the company in return for short-term margins and profits. The same could be sa

For the 50th time at least, I will reiterate (somewhat ironically) that the worst thing on HN isn't the off-topic stories but the constant meta-conversations about what is and isn't off-topic. Boring.

For a text-to-speech system to be as good as the standard audiobook, it would require the software actually understand the material and give each line the correct emotion and cadence it deserves. I find that words spoken at monotone or at a

Create a game, and people will play it as a game. Put a number next to someone or a color and people will change behavior to change the color/number. Especially hacker/gamer/competitive males, which are clearly represented pretty well here

Exactly - I expected more of the frustration to be about the menial work and how people weren't feeling motivated, not how annoyed they were when google skimped on snacks.
