lars's comment ( http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3371968 ) is right on target. I recently finished my PhD in biomedical engineering, and the hot field that everyone wants to go into is what we're calling BMI - Brain-Machine Interfaces

I'm sure you're joking, but unfortunately, not only is that approach wrong, the statement is wrong also. If anyone will lose, it's probably not going to be the law.

Pretty naive question here, but how large is the difference between base versions (i.e., debian vs. redhat)? I'm not a linux user so I have no experience with this stuff... can you run the same software on each? If this is too broad of a qu

At the risk of completely derailing the discussion, sometimes the UI simply just needs to be learned. People who are unfamiliar with elevators would have no idea how to use one.. there's no instructions anywhere, just a panel with numbers.

I just started working at a 31-story corporate office with sixteen elevators (A-H for 1-15, I-O for 15-31), and the elevators here incorporate a genius move... outside the elevator are little panels with numbers, and you choose the floor yo

I'm curious what Paul Graham and other top VCs think about this. This would be a pretty big shift in how companies expand early on, and it could potentially change the personality of the first employee.

From my experience, this is immensely helpful in dealing with the problem of procrastination, which has come up a lot here on HN. I found it to be most useful in two scenarios: 1) You have a complex problem that will require a complex solut

Kind of funny to have this making front page while the "Don't be a free user" link ( http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3320931 ) is the top story. What is the business model here?

Unfortunately for them, I closed my PayPal account last night. One too many stories like this for me, thankyouverymuch. If I ever need them again to buy something I'll purchase without logging in, anonymously, like most people do, manually

Their statement actually isn't nearly as bad as you imply. They mention that there was a problem, that they handled it incorrectly, and that they were multiple conflicting factors associated. They even admit at the end (again) that they wer

Paypal may have a point, they may not. Regardless, freezing thousands of dollars on a whim because "they're worried" and then freezing the individual's personal account is just boneheaded. You can't run a bank like that.

There seem to be two points to this article; (1) CTR is a terrible metric for ad effectiveness, and (2) the web is an extremely rich medium for displaying ads, and there's still potential that has yet to be discovered. I'm not sure why the

What's with all the hate? The author has a lot of valid points. 1) If it's supposed to be the "encyclopedia that anyone can edit", then it should be easy to use. If the "anyone can edit" is marred by insane levels of bureaucracy, making it

This (extremely well-written) document has made the HN front page at least once before. I think this is a testament to how useful this information is for entrepreneurs. I didn't have time to read it in full last time, glad it's back again.

A very good point; what's good for the goose may not be good for the gander, so to speak. I would love to hear an Android developer's take on the usefulness of specs.

This is a good article, but the spec has been dead since the release of the first iPhone. (Maybe earlier, but that was when everyone talked about it.) Apple showed that users don't really care about spec unless everything else looks the sam

There are two other significant problems here. 1. Job security . Most people seem to appreciate having a steady source of income. For a company to regularly outsource their jobs to the "smartest person" means that all the other "smart bu
