Excellent answer, and I love your thought process. Why have all your work go to waste not publishing it? This way, you don't have to worry about the inevitable "Why doesn't it do <random fringe feature>? I NEED that in my workflow

Check out the site now, it looks like this has been fixed. At the very least, not bad response time on their part once they got wind of it.

I agree with this completely. It's one thing for the concept itself to be hard to understand. It's another thing for the concept to be simple, but proper execution to be tough, frustrating, and prone to error.

Good post. Having just started reading Duncan Watt's "Everything is Obvious" ( http://amzn.com/0385531680 ) critique on common sense, this looks like exactly what he's talking about... people who aren't familiar with the difference between

I've recently also started learning RoR. For me, the best motivator is to have something in my head that I want to accomplish as soon as I finish the "learning" phase. For this language, I have two projects - one as a "I just learned this

Stick it on Github as three files - image, html, css - so folks can "watch" it. I've found that the watch feature of github helps me remember all these little nifty snippets of functionality so that, one day, when the need comes around, I a

Good point. Still, this relies heavily on the use of palettes, which we haven't seen in Metro. Maybe they'll have some UI elements like that in Metro, I don't know.

But what would it look like? Consider Powerpoint. There needs to be a way to switch slide layout, add elements to the slide, work with animations & transitions, reorder slides, etc. And that's just some of the things that users will w

If I'm reading this right, Gruber's effectively saying, "Metro, and Metro alone (i.e., no desktop), is a good competitor to the iPad." That's wonderful; a real iPad competitor. But what about all the rest of the computers? You know, those b

This is an excellent point. For some reason, this pre-release has everyone all excited. There hasn't been this much buzz in the tech circles over a Microsoft product in probably over a decade. Uber's comment below makes me wonder what every

Gruber is popular on HN because he consistently writes high quality, thought-provoking tech-related articles. Gruber is unpopular because many of his pieces contain enough smug to choke a small giraffe.

If that's the case, why are so many tech bloggers treating this as though it's the "OS that will defeat the iPad"? If everyone thought as you do, then they would realize that comparing this to a shipped product which has already been evalua

This article is kind of confused; it's talking about two separate things. 1) Report bugs. Yes, do that... do that a lot. Everyone benefits, and it doesn't take you a lot of time. 2) Exhaustively test every bug report you submit. I d

First feedback - redesign the front page to make the "sign up/sign in" form much more prominent. See tumblr's front page ( http://www.tumblr.com/ ) for a good example of how to do this; I'm sure there are other very good examples.
