Can you elaborate? You can't win while appealing to "virtually no one". In cases where the national popular vote didn't win - we're talking about a few % points of a difference.

It's a critical factor for the United part of the USA and the fact that we're a republic. Population isn't everything. We have states like Alaska, Hawaii and Wyoming which are national treasures with low populations.

What's great about the electoral college is you need to have cross-regional appeal to win. So its less about which states are going to be battleground but that you generally can't just appeal to 1 or 2 regions and win. In a goal o

I wouldn't trust it as a baby cam - the Nest or anything that relies on wifi. If you do, probably a good idea to add a cheap audio monitor as well.

I understand where you may be coming from but I disagree. If you have an economic perspective for the hero, yes, most of the time heroic is dumb (standing up for what's right to your own economic detriment, fighting a patent troll in c

Java guys didn't ship much at my first real gig. Lots of tooling time and watching movies or discussing Star Trek. I shipped apps in 2 weeks myself that the company got paid ~70k for. And we kept my clients.

All the worst projects I've inherited and rescued were Symfony. Developed by senior devs that overengineered. I'm sure newer Symfony is better and there's some good stuff out there but as a decade+ senior engineer I like Symf

I wouldn't be so hard on yourself. The family is in a very difficult spot right now and people all cope and behave differently. I'd recommend the book Never Split the Difference which was written by a former hostage negotiator. Fr

I agree with you. I always try to disqualify traffic with price. Many people optimize for CTR but that's not usually good when you're doing leads and/or sales. It's easy to write ads that get higher CTR. Then your CPC wi

I've seen it surprisingly easy. I went on a deer hunt in Texas and the ranch owner had all these automatic feeders that ring a bell when they drop the feed. So the deer just show up on cue and they had blinds all over the property. Mor

I've seen this quite often too! In my experience it happened more with Lyft and when I hailed a ride from the airport. I live pretty close to the airport (6-20 mins) so the sneaky drivers that see the fare will call me and confirm my d

Your suggestion of weight only is even worse than BMI. That's like saying a 15 lb turkey is fatter than 12 lbs of lard. BMI doesn't account for muscle mass. If you have decent muscle you're overweight according to BMI. weight

Because many times it's just about being proactive and getting things done ASAP because having your client find out first is bad. I also prefer not starting my day with a fire. I'd rather do it off-hours.

I don't think so for my usage and I shared it because it's cost effective and would be acceptable for a lot of devs' projects. I still get UptimeRobots notifications if Zapier or Twilio hiccups. For the phone notifications, i

I remember these guys from the first TwilioCon in 2011. It was some sort of group fireside chat IIRC and they were describing how their initial product was all on Amazon with no redundancy. Of course many of their clients were on EC2 as wel

Same here. I need a phone call to pay any attention. I use UptimeRobot and their RSS feed to pipe into a Zapier Zap which uses Twilio to call me and read me the site that is down in a British voice haha. Easy to setup, works and really cost

If you mean shadow as far as likeability for Lakers fans I agree. But nothing as far as talent. Kobe isn't even a top 3 Laker of all-time and LeBron is on another level which is a notch below Jordan.

It wasn't just devs that didn't know how to properly optimize SQL. Programming w a NoSQL db was a better experience because there was no object impedance mismatch. ORMs fill the gap of course and SQL w JSON types are really nice.

Agreed. Wage growth has been non-existant for a long time. Every administration is basically like "hey we're doing great - look at these unemployment numbers" and then you talk to people and they're saying the opposite.
