Mashable is kind of shameless with the "advertorials" lately aren't they? I said about QR codes on Twitter a while ago: "QR codes: like using a megaphone to seduce someone. The ugliest, stupidest, most useless (and used less) tech in a whil

If you are interested in eye tracking and HCI it's worth reading up on saccades ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saccade ) and eye tracking ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eye_tracking ) I didn't do much HCI but worked with some HCI labs that

A spreadsheet doesn't waste time in the negotiation dance. I'll gladly pay for convenience and directness, which I do frequently. Think of it this way, given the choice between paying X for a service, or having to "Call for pricing..." whic

At 13 I was interning at our local newspaper and they were running 0.91 beta kernel of Linux on the machine that extracted data from a PDP-11 (via serial) and parsed it for saving to the Mac's for QuarkXPress. My first Unix experience was d

I don't think it nonsense. I think there is a threshold where the maintenance/anxiety from the provided options exceeds the value of the service. I think its a sweetspot for any service actually (not just Google+ and Facebook).

Something I've been thinking about: at what point does the pain of maintenance of a service outweigh its usefulness? Between Facebook's new privacy settings, Google+ Circles, etc, these services have become much more about protecting and cu

Basically it means we should trust the "away" message, but still can drop a line if you want. Away could also mean "mentally busy" or "on the phone" If I could trust the away messages, as a team lead I always had a status board as to where

I think that this is mostly to force people toward AppleID/iCloud as a universal method of authentication, as well as a reaction to the Germany and South Korea lawsuits over location data. It makes sense that Apple wants iCloud to be the de

I keep a work log using Day One on the Mac/iOS. Mostly so I can remember who I called, changes I made to code, etc. I rarely if ever look back on it. That being said, I never delete anything and have files going back 18 years on my Drobo, s

When I'm coding I listen to movie soundtracks. When I'm doing emails its usually vintage punk music. When I'm in a really really bad mood its really really fast punk. The Lost soundtracks are really good for coding actually.

I hate articles like this. It's like saying "this just in, four cylinder Yamaha motors are selling much better than BMW 328i's" Of course they are! Honda, Toyota, Mitsubishi use Yamaha motors.
