I really like the separation between the semantic content and the visualization there. HTML/JS/CSS throw everything together instead. But XSLT is nothing I want to have to work with..

Your website specifically says that Gemini intentionally isn't extensible and that any such attempts are shunned by the mailing list. This sounds like the same fragmentation disaster that we had with the web.. An Internet Explorer come

By streaming I meant live streaming as opposed to video playback. There one can offer the video at different qualities by switching between different files, or change the quality adaptively within the same stream. I'm not aware of site

Out of curiosity, why is adaptive bitrate something you want for video playback outside of streaming? Personally I prefer having to buffer a bit but getting the video at the desired minimum quality. E.g. having to seek back because text sud

Oh how I wish that everyone would support pkgconfig! I've been adding pkgconfig support to various libraries, sometimes being shut down or ignored (dangling PRs). Meanwhile cmake etc often write their own proprietary support (find modu

This analysis completely misses the mark and spreads a lot of untruths. The two major points are: 1. Discord makes money by letting users elevate their status, while offering core feature for free. 2. It is 10x better than other offerings.

Working at a hosting provider in the past I realized I'd be out of a job if web browsers implemented native support for torrents real fast.

My previous employer would just sent requests to delete negative reviews on Google Maps because the reviewer didn't use their real name, and poof, it was gone. Easy as pie.

I found the OOP chapter to be very questionable and against industry practice. Even for simple software you don't want to clobber rendering and collision detection together into the same object. The algorithms also naturally become O(n

I've seen demos of Jonathan Blow's language Jai where he shows how fast his current video game project in Jai compiles. He's doing the opposite of what you say: just give all input files to one compiler invocation without hea

That contradicts with the article. The article states that the Muslim scholar theorized that god actively mutates the animals that want to adapt, i.e. god didn't just invent "the mechanism" of mutation, as you say.

Just because somebody is a native speaker of English, doesn't mean they'd be good English teachers, true. But somebody who only knows English from text books can't possibly teach it properly, no matter what.

A couple of weeks of stifled productivity versus years of buggy, insecure, and inefficient software (e.g. because you'll be afraid to use asynchronous IO, threading, etc). I'll choose the former.

I think you should worry. One of my math professors taught us how factoring to a (x+b (x+c*(...))) is a great optimization in an introductory class, because he had no idea about CPU pipelines for example.

I don't think it's harsh. It is a reasonable question to ask. Academia is rife with people who have never worked in the industry, completely disconnected from reality.

You shouldn't use time in this scenario at all, but wait on a condition. It's unreasonable to expect a non-realtime kernel to offer this precision with timers. Doing serious audio work on non-realtime kernels, you have to expect s
