"We are not able to make any definitive claims that this compound is safe..." Is this quote taken out of context? Because I thought the first step of any sort of human trial of a drug is to determine its safety. Intuitively I can&

This seems incorrect because as far as I know Theranos didn't innovate. Their machines didn't work, did they?

That reminds me of my own story regarding negative numbers. I was super young, maybe second grade (7, 8 yrs old?). Family friends had dinner with us, and their kids who were maybe 5 years older than me were talking about "negative"

The one thing that drives me away is that while I feel like I am improving one's quality of life, much of my experience in medicine has been seeing my mentors and role models save one's life. It's probably the one thing I w

From the article, 29- and 21- letters improvement in visual acuity. I believe this means at least 4-6 rows improvement from the chart you read off of. Think about that for a second. Nearly blind, or actually blind, to being able to read aga

When you say abused, do you mean that the campaign did not violate it in 2012 but took advantage of the lenience Facebook allowed them? Thanks

Thanks! I figured it must have been that tumors express nucleolin on the surface rather than normally inside of the nucleolus.

I think it depends on the type of autoimmune disease. Some are fairly obvious, such as alopecia areata.

Here is the actual paper, with abstract: https://www.nature.com/articles/nbt.4071 Major things that are interesting just from the abstract: 1) their targeting dna aptamer binds to nucleolin (how this isn't binding

Yeah...nucleolin is pretty ubiquitously expressed in most cells. How specific is their aptamer (antibody?) ? Additionally, this is a similar idea to chemo embolization procedures (something I know is done in the US for some liver metastasis

I think the main reason we can't break down cellulose is because we don't have the enzymes to do so. It's not as if cellulose is actually all that different to polysaccharides we are able to digest, it simply has beta 1->

It almost feels as if more universities should have two different "introductory" CS courses: one for non-majors, and another for majors. I would however express that in my CS curriculum (only 6 years ago) we did not start using C+

Appreciate your perspective. One small quibble is that you saying you are Christian did not really aid your point, as far as I know. As in, without it your argument still makes sense to me.

Only thing I'm bothered by is the speed of the fingerprint scanner. It's the same scanner from the 5s, so 1st gen touch ID. Makes for a less than ideal wait time for what is a generally snappy phone. Battery life is fantastic as w

It goes back to basically any medication that acts on G Protein Coupled Receptors (of which opioid Receptors fall under). If given the same dose for over 10 days, by day 3 you are seeing a significant loss of analgesic effect.

I'd argue something a bit different. Coding is far more accessible today and far more visible as a field one could get a job in than ever before. As such, you have way more students trying to learn some introductory CS. Maybe the propo
