I think this is a bit narrow. I’d say it’s a credential that shows you know how to conduct research. In my case it was less of an apprenticeship and more of a lot of stumbling around until I found a way to create research that matched my st

Don’t be terrified, just keep pushing. That’s what separates those who finish from those who don’t. I say this as someone who nearly did not finish a PhD and had terrible mismatch with my advisor. If you have a mismatch with your advisor, I

I used to do this with a graphite pencil, battery, simple 1 transistor amplifier, and a piezo buzzer. Lots of fun. Makes me yearn for the days of radio shack.

Semantically maybe they are similar, but in the sociological parlance they mean very different things. Yes, equality of opportunity is a good thing. If you have the qualifications, anyone should be given equal consideration. Changing or rel

Yes I am. What you describe is equality, which I think is great! What they are advocating for is equity, a much different goal. Equity involves giving preferential treatment to certain groups of people who are perceived as persecuted in the

Is anyone else frightened to see equity explicitly spelled out as a goal of a US government office? Equity implicitly requires enforcement of equal outcomes. I do not think the federal government is capable or benevolent enough to carry out

I disagree with the parent post about the use of Greek letters, but it seems like a valid point worth of discussion. Certainly in the spirit of HN. I’ve seen an increasingly worrying trend of using downvotes to voice disagreement, rather th

Would it be the same in a hypothetical completely homogeneous gas? My assumption is that turbulent changes in pressure cause diffraction, causing the light to not take a perfectly straight path. I don’t know enough about physics to know if

A human cannot exist without eating. That means I must eat other living things, plants, mushrooms, and animals. If you believe all living things are conscience to an extent, like I do, then why do we draw the line at animals. I’ve made peac
