Is anyone else frightened to see equity explicitly spelled out as a goal of a US government office? Equity implicitly requires enforcement of equal outcomes. I do not think the federal government is capable or benevolent enough to carry out that enforcement
- tomrod 5y agoIt doesnt bother me that an employer wants to pay equal pay for equal work. Are you assuming something more is involved here?
- enchiridion 5y agoYes I am. What you describe is equality, which I think is great! What they are advocating for is equity, a much different goal. Equity involves giving preferential treatment to certain groups of people who are perceived as persecuted in the current social climate. It has no basis in law, and is antithetical to a meritocracy.
- tomrod 5y agoEquity is semantically equality. I'm not sure I see your point. Are people being paid differently for the work? Or are you saying there is a policy driven filter attempting to offset some of society's pre-existing filtering (thus giving equality of opportunity)?
- enchiridion 5y agoSemantically maybe they are similar, but in the sociological parlance they mean very different things. Yes, equality of opportunity is a good thing. If you have the qualifications, anyone should be given equal consideration. Changing or relaxing requirements in order to attempt some societal good is wrong. Those issues should be addressed upstream of any employment decisions, mainly by removing impediments to success, not by preferential treatment.
