That doesn't compute for me. You'd need to give an example for me to understand you.

But increasing throughput. Given how shitty US public transport is in general, maybe that's the right tradeoff. New York is one of the best, but still shitty by EU standards.

Yeah, I agree. What the parent said is akin to saying they could have donated an extra $10 million by taking it out of their R&D budget. If they thought they could cut an extra $10 million in costs somewhere, they would. That's bus

Not really, because they would have spent the ad budget anyway, just without calling attention to the donation.

That has yet to be proved viable. It might be competitive, it might not, we'll have to see. At any rate you could build nuclear faster than that will take to be ready for market in the best case.

Trudeau's policy picks were to check boxes on unwritten gender and race quotas. They are unlikely to have been the best people for the positions, because that wasn't the criteria being applied. Some people might take umbrage at me

Canada wants to implement this under the Trudeau liberal government. It's been a little disturbing to watch a Canadian liberal government take steps in the direction of totalitarian control since the beginning of the pandemic. When was

That was Einstein's view, but it was disproved in the seventies by experimental measurements of Bell's inequality. I'm just a computer guy, so someone else can chime in with a more detailed explanation. It's also easy to

I think the best he can hope for here is settle the lawsuit that will follow for buying twitter at a slightly reduced price. The amount he would pay to walk away is roughly equal to the current fair market value of Twitter. I wouldn't

That's only in case he can't get financing. There's no option to pay $1B and walk away. Twitter can sue to force him to complete the deal under the contract they signed. However I suspect the lawsuit to be settled rather than

Exactly this. I fixed a problem like this a week ago. I found some duplicated code, factored it out into one place by introducing an abstract base class (Python) and in the process discovered one of the duplicated methods had a logic error

It's not window dressing, it address the symptoms, not the cause. But it's the symptoms that are causing the problem for us, it's enough to address them. We need to buy time to solve the root cause. Why would blocking sunligh

This is a solution for climate change that's been tossed around for a while in various forms. I think it may just be one of the most viable thanks to SpaceX bringing down the cost of space launch. With starship this might just be one o

Ectopic pregnancies and other medical emergencies are usually excluded from abortion laws. Law makers could always do something dumb though, there's lots of precedent for that.

I find the outcome unintuitive. Each person has the same starting conditions and then randomly gives away a dollar each round. There's no interest or compounding factors mentioned. My intuition is that, given enough rounds each person

It's interesting that companies are these little island command economies inside the market economy. Is there a better way to organize them? Would democracy really work? In countries, many consider democracy to be actually worse than a

My understanding is that heat pumps can be over 100% efficient because they're actually moving heat from A to B where one side is the outside environment. It doesn't violate thermodynamics if you view the Earth as a closed system.

Not if the judicial system is separate. I would say the problem here is stupid laws putting people in jail for being in possession of drugs for personal consumption. I think it's a separate concern.

As long as prisons are separate from the judicial system, I don't see the connection. They can't actually send more people to prison.
