I wish articles would at least explain acronyms the first time they're mentioned. Just putting the full form in parenthesis would go a long way and not disturb readers that already know them. Maybe it's because I'm not a nati

That's interesting. I have a Pi 1B running non-stop since 2013 with the default Raspian image and the SD card still seems to be fine. Maybe I've just been lucky till now…

I'm still waiting for widely available and affordable e-ink displays for tinkerers. I'd love to put one onto a Raspberry Pi to show some information, but it's just too expensive right now.

It's really annoying that WhatsApp chat export isn't available in Germany. I used to export my chats as backup and for creating fun stats for group chats with friends, but that feature got removed about a year ago. I haven't

It's suggested in the HN guidelines to keep the original title whenever possible and not to editorialize. But I agree, without prior knowledge of yesterday's outtake it's hard to guess what's behind that title.

The fact that they indicated to increase the rule limit for over a year but haven't done so yet (the beta still has a limit of 30k) doesn't seem like they really have addressed the drawbacks. I wouldn't think increasing that

In my country (Europe) meat substitutes are more expensive than the cheap meat you'll find in discounters. So if you want to have a meat-like taste for many poorer people meat is the obvious choice.

To be fair it doesn't seem to be _that_ bad on this thread: There's the very vocal OP as well as a "discussion" between various users that ranges from "please switch back to ReCaptcha" to "please keep hCap

To be fair that piezo alarm seems to be the fallback for an power outage only. I think it's acceptable to be waken by a piezo instead of having no alarm at all.

They are sortable for me (Firefox). Clicking a table column header (with two triangles as "sortable" indicator) sorts by that column. I think tables have to be specifically marked as sortable for this to work. But in case of this

But situations are never "the same". The input (camera images, sensor data) will always be (slightly) different and – in this example – might just lift the confidence of "this is a truck standing on the road" over the th

It's mind-boggling to think how fragile and potentially dangerous those dependency ecosystems are – no matter if it's Ruby, JS, PHP or other languages widely used for web apps. We all just hope that nothing bad will happen or that

No, according to the article this will only evade the hash-based lookup. All images that aren't in the hash database are then analyzed by some other, computational more expensive system (OCR, …).
