I've always found it weird that people seem to obsess so much on how Google does things. From hiring to writing code and tooling. Google is so much not like any other company, especially 20 employee startups. Trying to apply their reci

Is it? I don't see anything in this article establishing it. It may be true, but it would be nice to have a proof of it at least.

I was not talking about CI/CD tools, but things like slack, tickets, wiki, shared calendars, etc. I "shout" at my coworkers through slack and I feel like it achieves the same result as if we were in an open office. Better eve

Terrible example. Josephine did take the BF's arguments into consideration. She said "yes you're right on all these points but even so it is a more personal gift than just cash". Unless the BF pits forward another idea h

We can slice it the way we want. We can talk about office space cost or "decreased productivity" or whatever. The real reason these execs are pissed at remote workers is because these filthy peons now get to enjoy a bit of the f

Where do you get that coordination and creativity require in person time? I would argue that most creative activities are better done alone in a cabin in the middle of the woods. And I coordinate just fine with tools available online.

I would not care one bit about your office buddy. Working from home I can take my kids to school in the morning, sometimes even pick them up, have lunch with my wife, always be home for dinner, live in a very nice low cost area, and I even

Totally agree. I never understand the complain that goes "if I want access to all the shows i need 6 subscriptions at $20 each!" OK, then maybe dont watch all the shows? Or do a rolling subscription? But I'm ready to admit th

I would be so suspicious of the quality produced by an engineer who types ~15k lines of code per day. Just type 500 and solve the actual business problem in a simple and concise manner thank you very much.

And with all these words you were not able to confirm or refute the hypothesis that you are still early in your career and still have a lot to learn. Or maybe you have confirmed it after all.

It started being silly when the bit about "taking credit for the work reports do" failed to mention that they ate also supposed to be accountable when the team fails.

Nice privilege to be able to say that money is just superficial. You just dealt with bad managers. I could write the same rant about ICs, or about my plumber and whatnot.

I dont even know how seriously to take this comment. First of all, active shooters can be found anywhere. Of course someone can go crazy and show up at the workplace with a gun. Second, it depends on what you mean by common. 80% of active s

The paradox is that remote townhalls are probably so much more productive since everybody can just put it in the background and actually get things done.

Ok, and isn't it worth losing 20% of productivity for something that may improve people's quality of life? This whole productivity thing is so dumb.

Dude, my numbers are literally in your link "But as with everything else in New York in the past three years, things went awry. Last year’s 88 track deaths were 35% above the 2018 and 2019 averages — 65 each year. For context, 120 pede

Ok. Some rando can also push you on the track as the subway comes in. I think last year it was close to 100 deaths on the subway in NYC. It's pretty much the same amount of pedestrians who died in a car accident. Not saying it's c

While I never took the time to learn Clojure in depth or use it for any serious project, I feel like I've been deeply inspired by Hickey's talks. A lot of the principles he promoted helped me so much in my career as a developer.

Man, that's some serious black belt level overthinking. One open position, 1000 resumes received, pick a handful to interview, hire 1 after a few weeks, 999 come to HN to ask if the job market is tough and say they can't get hired
