You're being too kind. I disagree with the "little or no basis in reality". In actuality, there's no basis in reality. I should know, I wrote the article. I hadn't actually planned to have the headline read the way it does -- but now t

It would be really interesting (at least to me) to read the original YC applications of successful YC companies like reddit and Xobni. Would make a fascinating read. With their consent, of course.

By the way, I think Startuply should have a company profile on Startuply. Even if you're not hiring, it's probably a good idea to get a profile posted. Good luck to the Startuply folks from a fellow startup fanatic.

This is the first YC startup I've seen a while that seems to have picked ASP.NET as the development platform. Not a criticism (I did this too at one point, but have since switched), just an observation.

I wish there were more details on the engineering team in the article. All they say is "25 engineers working remotely". Would be interesting to know what the growth in the engineering team has been from the early days, and how they are dis

It would be interesting if responses to these kinds of questions became "required disclosures" when startups hired new employees that involve stock options. Would help protect the naive/inexperienced.

For some reason, this is becoming an increasingly common pattern amongst the websites of "mainstream media". It's like they all got the same memo one Monday morning: Hey, if we break up our articles into 5 pages, we get 5X as many page vie

Why is it that practically all startups need investors? Particularly web/software startups? Seems that more and more startups could be started with personal funding these days and not really require outside funding.

Our startup ( http://www.HubSpot.com ) originally started in C#/ASP.NET. C# the language is great. ASP.NET, I'm not such a big fan of. They tried too hard to make it resemble the event-driven VB programming model. We've since decided to

So many startups these days have a hard time convincing themselves they need even one revenue stream in the early days.

Lets remove the word fair, and I'll submit the following: 1. Options: 1% - 5% since this is a "non-founder" early employee and you already have another developer. 2. 4 years vesting with 1 year cliff seems to be "market" (i.e. the most c

Very useful look at the dynamics of the social news business. This sector had a lot of activity last year, but seems to have slowed down (in terms of new startups popping up). But, that could just be me. By the way, if any YC hacker types

Making money at a startup and having fun are (thankfully) not mutually exclusive. One could argue that the more revenues you get, the more fun a startup is.

I'm just one guy, but I think the GetClicky pricing is pretty fair. We've got some web analytics functionality as part of our marketing software suite and it is one of the more expensive things to support.

Sounds to me like he missed the common use of the "low hanging fruit" phrase. The idea behind low-hanging fruit is that it's low hanging (easy to get to). Not that it's the "best" fruit, but it's the easiest to reach. Not one of my favorit

Cool. Now, if only ASP.NET was "cleaner" and didn't have all that "event-driven" ugliness. More widespread usage on Linux would help too. Mono just hasn't taken off in terms of mainstream production use.

It's important to make the distinction between outsourced developers and remote developers. The key is to have people that are very bright and passionately ommitted to the startup's cause.
