In 2019, I was able to spend 4 days in Canada without touching a single Canadian Dollar. On the other hand, 4 days in Germany absolutely required cash at virtually every meal and other non-hotel purchase.

Some states have laws that say cards must not expire or have fees, and they must be redeemable for cash. Unfortunately, New York does not seem to be among them: https://www.ncsl.org/research/financial-services-and-comm

I’ve always wondered how much CPU time and memory bandwidth is taken up by the OS zeroing out pages before handing them out, as well as programs and libraries clearing chunks of memory. I guess it’s enough that I’m surprised that there’s no

IBM mainframes in the 70's invariably came with the IBM 1403 high-speed band printer, which pretty much represented the apex of band-printing technology. They printed 132 column, 66 line pages of EBCDIC text at a few seconds per page (

As a consumer-products company, color is something Apple has long been obsessed about. The highlight of Steve Jobs' intro of the multi-color iMac G3 in 1999 was his comment about their colors: "Don't you just wanna lick '

As an American, I observe that the Brits use “isn’t it” to express something similar to “fei”. Example: “That’s the entrance, isn’t it?” seems to mean “You thought that that is the exit, did you? You’re an idiot.” The closest we Yanks have

You’re mistaken about the PDP-10. Yes, you could pack two pointer-to-word pointers into a single word; but a single word could also contain a single pointer-to-byte. See http://pdp10.nocrew.org/docs/instruction-set

Unlike “ls” and “cp”, “make” is a real word, so to help us human readers parse the document’s prose, adding the section number in parentheses gives our brains a quick clue as to what’s going on.
