What it is is irrelevant. How it presents itself to the user is exactly as a holistic, integrated, carefully designed computing ecosystem. I’m a software engineer, I’m perfectly well aware iOS and MacOS run on top of a Unix kernel. But un

Because Typescript is one of the best languages we have today and has major advantages over all others mentioned? I write (or have written, in the case of Go) all 4 professionally. - a vast ecosystem all based on async IO, sidestepping the

I guess a Roman, asked circa 300 AD how he feels about the decline of the empire, would have replied similarly. Java’s mindshare just isn’t where the exciting things in this field are happening. It’s more the domain of overengineered “big d

That sounds like an insane amount of work to me to end up with something objectively worse from a usability standpoint. But to each their own.

Could you elaborate on what you found easy about writing a GUI toolkit? Not being snarky, but easy is the last word I would use to describe it.

In practice, every person I have ever seen hold a DevOps title would have been called a sysadmin or something to that effect 10 years ago. They’re really not working on product features, even though they know how to code. Similarly, yes, th

Only if you’re talking “2 pizzas can feed the entire company” stage, really. Early stage b2b salespeople would, pre covid, spend all their time in between customer meetings in the car on the way to next one. Hard to implement a solid early

Sales by itself is a fulltime job as is marketing. That’s like looking for a software engineer who will also take care of accounting.

What about “roll your own” equates to google wallet? That’s very much not roll your own, and not what the grandparent was arguing.

But wouldn’t the point be that you don’t care about hardware level problems anymore? When I find a node with issues, I can just delete it from the pool and get a fresh one back. The bad network card? That’s for Google/Amazon/Digit

An old employer did this, but instead of just at the beginning this was a monthly rotation thing (3 days each month or so). Being forced to do support definitely was a major factor in my quitting. I don’t even mind support so much, used to

I think Rust kind of stole OCaml’s thunder. It has most of the same benefits, with a mostly familiar syntax and a lot of industry buy-in. And with recent versions, I never find myself fighting the borrow checker like I used to.

The original code snippet had no bugs until you added more code, stop arguing in bad faith. Also, the new snippet has a syntax error, the last version where this was valid reached end of life January 1st, and has been deprecated for 10 year

I don’t see how you’d have a number instead of a spring in a document in a typed language. Do you just directly dump user supplied data in your database without parsing/processing it? Otherwise, how is this not caught when it enters yo

Yeah, big yikes from me in Europe as well. I honestly don’t know if I could keep a straight face if I was shown a document like this, definitely my opinion of the manager would drop through the floor. Generally, when someone says “he/s

Well, I need to write a server if my requirements don’t fit a server side rendered application and/or my usecase does not fit the absolutely anemic performance of Rails, which also applies when using it only for an API (it’s not Ruby’s

I think you’re right to worry, I wouldn’t be able to think of any reason to use Ruby instead of something else if Rails is off the table (in terms of ecosystem, not talking about personal preference here). Which is a shame because I like it

No, this is literally the dumbest way possible to accomplish the task. It is as close to a brute force approach as you can get, I can see no way in which it could be less efficient without being malicious. And it is the only way of accompli

Yeah, nope. There are many appropriate levels of abstraction in between “do this the dumbest way possible” and “write raw unix syscalls using a library outside of the standard distribution”.

Let’s not do participation trophies though, Pike and Thompson were the original authors of Go. Both of them should know better. It’s fine to include an inefficient version if you also have a ‘proper’ way to fall back to when performance doe

Anecdata: in every single company I worked, tiny startups and giant corporations alike, “not everyone knows SQL well” was exactly the argument used to justify the ORM. Every single time, the people who do not know SQL, unsurprisingly, proce

While a good point, I would say the problem is caused by ORMs existing. Somehow somewhere we decided that a person who thinks SQL is too difficult should be using a database.

Last time I tried deploying Django (with Channels) on ASGI around 2017 or 2018, it was a total clusterfuck and fell over with about 20 websocket connections, and we had to scramble to revert that deployment. That’s not ASGI’s fault though,

If maintainability doesn’t matter, what are we even talking about though? If a solution is maintainable in Rust and an utter nightmare in C++, the answer to the question is “nope” for all practical purposes.

Never thought I would type these words but if you think half the people in any place can manage an upper middle class lifestyle, you need to check both your statistics and your privilege.
