The downsides are: 1. It’s slow in number crunching, if you’re doing any computation it won’t be much faster than Ruby (and much slower than Python due to the scientific computing ecosystem) 2. The amount of libraries is negligible, many ar

Although this may be controversial, the composition API feels very derivative of React hooks. I liked having Vue around as an alternative to React, and the declarative and predictable structure of components felt like the main selling point

I’m surprised this is your experience. At my current employer, that’s exactly how we approach hiring. I send the candidate a take-home that broadly covers the basic tech skills they need to be effective in their role (implement a simple tes

While certainly impressive, the Hello World example in their documentation is in no way preferable to writing JavaScript.

I’ve been involved in hiring since my very first dev job - not sure I’d trust a random resume builder more than my experience sifting through 100s of them. But I guess there may be some small market here.

Last time I was on the job market, I wrote a little CLI tool that given data in yaml format, spits out a pixel perfect pdf resume. It took me 2 hours and about 200 combined lines of Python, HTML and CSS. While I wish the author the best of

Eh, I’d say k8s with the help of Helm is about as simple as it can get to deploy and manage large clusters of networked applications. The equivalent done using e.g. Ansible playbooks would be far more complex. If the complexity seems too mu

Which as a consumer is exactly why I will continue giving them my money. The sooner targeted online advertising burns to the ground, the better, as far as I’m concerned.

Not sure the age of the original author is very relevant. GvR was 35 when he started work on Python. Chris Lattner was 31 with Swift, Brendan Eich was 33 with JS. These are some of the most used languages today. I’d say it’s more a matter o

I’m not sure you’re aware but you basically described the way it works in the latest macOS. If an app wants to touch something in user folders, it has to ask for permission.

Those are literally equivalent though, anything you can install using yarn you can install using npm. They connect to the same registry and use the same package.json format. Also, pip is relatively recent. Before that, it was a mix of setu

I'm not sure if you're being obtuse. But rewriting your stack in a language no one on the team knows because someone on HN said it's a better fit for your usecase is something no good engineers/managers would think is a

I actually use py2app to bundle the whole virtualenv into an .app file. Worked pretty much out of the box after fiddling a bit with pyenv (you have to build your python version with framework support).

I strongly resent you suggesting that someone not having kids must mean they have an "aching void" in their life. Have kids if that makes you happy, but don't presume that this is what everyone's life must orbit around.

For a personal project I am currently using this approach and can confirm it works great. I wrote just enough PyObjC to get myself a trayicon in the Mac menu bar, which shows a popover containing a wkwebview to localhost. Then I have all th

Also, a word of advice: the language in use should be one of the last things you're considering when looking for jobs. It really doesn't make a difference in your day-to-day happiness. Instead, try to look for a team you fit in wi

My job is about 50% Rust, 40% Typescript, 10% Python with regards to language. I would say Rust is the best day to day experience out of these 3 except for glitchy editor tooling and the long compile times. We have 1000 line services that t

In the Netherlands, most people who don’t live in a major city center (and many who do) still own a car. Us riding bikes isn’t an either/or thing, people do both.

I am a software engineer who works closely with a team of bioinformaticians. Your reply suggests you only have one side of the story. A bioinformatician is someone who has quite serious programming skills on top of their biology knowledge.
