There have always been plug-ins, especially by small developers on the Mac, which are AU only. Apple Silicon macs can now run iOS / iPadOS AUs as well, so there are a ton of plugins from that world that are not available as VSTs. Apple

If having a tethered battery reduces the weight of the headset, then I imagine it may be preferable that way. The weight of the Quest can make it uncomfortable to wear for long periods.

I know that each cable in VCV Rack imposes a 1-sample delay. However isn't the audio still transmitted to the audio interface in blocks? It's not clear why a DAW would need an intermediary in this case, other than something analog

No, but there were already other software synthesis options available for people who don't want a skeuomorphic interface, as various levels of complexity - Max/MSP, PureData, Reaktor, CSound, SuperCollider, Audulus, KarmaFX, etc.
