Sounds like OP is having a bit of a Chesterton's Fence moment. It's clearly complicated, but you describe why this is probably implemented the way it is. The scheme reminds me of Macaroons: https://blog.gtank.cc/ma

You could use one of those services that expect a regular http heartbeat. I'm personally using uptimerobot for that. Within a .bat or .sh file, add a restic [...] && curl <heartbeat-url> and you'll get eventua

I’ve first seen this in the Quake 2 source as a way to dynamically load the render code, e.g. software/gl: the structs exchanged can be seen here https://github.com/id-Software/Quake-2/blob/372afde46e7def

Not OP, but while that sounds like an easy feature to add, suddenly the form might me used to spam, flood or otherwise annoy other email addresses.

Maybe I’m missing something, but why send the tar generated stream through a non-compressing compressor when you could just send the tar directly?

Correct headline would be "Chaos Computer Club shows the German healthcare system how 400M Euros might be saved". Given how incompetent politics has been in the past, I wouldn't be surprised if this is ignored with some bulls

Wouldn’t that just increase the number of calls, now that you can receive them on multiple numbers?

Streaming sounds incredibly simple compared to a designing a brand new handheld. Especially as they already have a growing catalog available through Game Pass Ultra.

It’s not really an OS problem: it’s the userland allocator that needs to implement this. So on Linux that would mostly be a glibc change to how malloc/free is implemented. The OS itself doesn’t know whether or not a processes memory pa

You might look into "The Forgotten City". Similar "world mechanic" and you really get to know the place while playing it. I enjoyed it after also playing Outer Wilds.

They at least partially use Stripe as they credit card processor. Not sure if that indirection would be helpful.

Aside from what's mentioned already: Longevity. Nothing is more frustrating than being forced to go through already working code just because some version update changed the syntax/semantic.

It's pretty shitty, at least 8 or so years ago. Not sure about the current state. Back then it had, for example, no length information in the header (so you always have to parse it completely and cannot skip any packet), shifted packet

A quick look at Hetzners page also seems to indicate they use zfs: they also have integrity checks and their snapshot directory is .zfs/snapshots. Seems pretty similar.

I’m in almost the exact same position, minus the knocking VCs. For a while I felt like I should look for funding and more growth to be a real „company“. Over time I realized that the path this would probably take me on isn’t really for me:

Never heard of that. So I looked it up and it seems a service completely based on discord? Both for the community and support (I presume) as well as accessing the service itself? There doesn't even seem to be any HTTP API. Weird :)

Agreed. Had to think about that one too a moment, but something felt wrong. XOR is bitwise, so if your statement was true, it would mean that two 1 bits or two 0 bits would both end up producing a 0 bit result. Clearly that would make the w
