YMMV indeed. AngelList only works for those companies who already have preexisting connections to the angel/VC community. For companies with little or no existing social proof, AngelList is shockingly ineffective.

I would bet against this actually occurring, at least from the standpoint of anecdotal experience. When I was 17 I started my first company, then shortly thereafter, signed on to a dot com startup. At the time I swore to myself that I woul

Zerigo, cool little startup in Colorado that got acquired earlier this year: http://www.zerigo.com/managed-dns Their API offers full control over everything, which is good because the way you set up geodns records is ridiculous - scriptin

Sort of. Our site instances are shared-nothing peers, so there's no primary/secondary. Users resolve the closest host to them ( anycast geoIP )by default, but if one of the hosts goes unavailable, the DNS entry for that host is removed by

This is the fourth downtime event this week, and it won't be the last. Linode appears to have an abusive relationship with the people at Hurricane Electric. No matter how poorly HE treats Linode, Linode always takes it and begs for more. O

It's not a "big" scene, but it's a decent one. We're located in Orange County, and there are quite a few media-focused tech shops in LA proper. You are at a bit of a disadvantage in that employers who require ass-in-seat time will necessit

We grew our e-commerce business with extremely limited resources, as well. You'll need to be more specific about what aspects of your business you're having a difficult time with for me to be able to comprehensively answer your question. Y

staunch, I wish I could upvote you more. This is an excellent article you linked to, and it may very well be the case that the YC network adds sufficient value to make up for the "insane" valuation. Thank you. That said, I'm still hoping

Thank you for the sentiment, but I have no intention of applying. I was just curious why the list appears to be so devoid of ecommerce companies. I strongly suspect the answer is somewhere along the lines of "same reason Henry Ford didn't

"pointers... arguably the trickiest concept in low-level languages, having no simple real-world analogy" Arguably, indeed. The analogy is quite simple - a gigantic roulette wheel with 2^$membusbits slots, except the numbers are sequential.

I appreciate your detailed and involved response, and I appreciate your experienced perspective. That said, I'd like to make a few points. First, I suspect you're assuming I'm new to the industry or that I am working on my first startup.

I'm ambivalent about this. Requiring an online portfolio for a designer does make sense, but a blog? The only "drive" that attention whoring on a blog shows is the drive to get attention.

How exactly do you look at startups outside your network? Do you actually take seriously incoming email pitches or cold calls? Do you actively seek out little-known companies that you think you could add value to? I am a little curious as

Something I have noticed about the VC community is that it is very much dominated by an insular mindset that only permits introductions by companies that are already connected in some way. Companies without these connections don't have a c

You raise an interesting point on the male developers, and I admit I may be suffering from filter bias - I have interviewed plenty of guys who have no passion for the business, but never hired them, so I am making claims about the guys I ac

This is so far removed from my experience as to make me wonder if you live on the same planet I do. Specifically, I have met one female developer in my entire life, and I have been in a hiring position for 11 years now. Additionally, I ha

Of course, but the question refers specifically to "early stage", which would presumably cover the year-ish of time during which many startups do have access to a free labor pool.

That article is just incredible. $11MM raised, assuming 25% dilution, giving them a ~$44MM valuation on only $1MM in revenue? I had not the faintest idea there was a huge valuation bubble in my own industry. I am a little bit shocked.

As I recently discovered, you cannot run a software firewall of any kind inside a solaris container. Everything else about SmartOS seems quite great to me, but my evaluation term was limited.
