I suspect that a lot of deathbed regrets about not spending enough time with your kids is for the benefit of the kids. Who would say “I’m glad I didn’t spent all that much time with you and your siblings. Frankly. I had better things to do.

I really like this, but to to add an alternate perspective: I’m skeptical of deathbed regrets, and regrets in general. I don’t think your present self actually knows what your past self went through. We remember events but are bad at rememb

You’re correct, it’s not unsolvable, which is why it is being solved. It’s just a slow process, for the reasons mentioned.

Have you considered moving to a big city, even if it’s not in the US, which I know is your preference? It won’t fix all your problems but having more opportunities professionally and romantically might change your outlook somewhat. You’re i

The delays, the cost overruns and the general bureaucracy surrounding the whole project are likely the reasons why it _didn't_ fail miserably. It's definitely not a situation where you want to move fast and break things.

I'm not sure if I'm optimistic about autonomous vehicles or just very pessimistic about human drivers. I have no confidence that the next driver making a left turn while I'm crossing the road won't kill me. I'm much

This might just be an assumption. We'd need to compare with childless couples. As a datapoint of one, I'm getting close to 40, just over 10 years of marriage without children, and this article describes my experience eerily well a

This is the key. We like to blame people for being inactive and overweight, but we've designed our transportation and food systems so that only the most motivated can be anything else.

If a web framework in the Pyramids was discovered, it would defy our understanding of the history of technology and "simply shouldn't exist". It's a dramatic way of putting it, but it's really just saying that our u

Reluctance to ask stupid questions comes from a fear of rejection. I studied physics in undergrad and I found it pretty difficult, but wanted to be a part of the group of smart physics kids. It left me with a pretty strong fear of looking s

You may be missing my point. If no one believes in the country’s existence, including the people who live in the land that the country is purported to encompass, then it doesn’t exist. Nations aren’t tangible physical objects. They exist in

Citizenship is a meaningful thing to most people. Of course it's a legal fiction, but so is marriage. Personally I've never given up a citizenship, but I imagine that it'd be an emotional experience.
