Latine loquor. Inutilis id est, sed iucundus. My brother and I had six years of Latin in school. He's a biologist, and used to put it in his resume for kicks.

Small nitpick: it irks me to see "yerba mate" spelled as "yerba maté." I wonder where the hell that came from. I suspect it's about not confusing it with mate as in pal or buddy.

The concept of Oscar-style awards for startups makes as much sense as Toddlers and Tiaras. No, make that Embryos and Tiaras. I am appalled to see this on the front page of HN.

Ok, it's not a problem that doesn't exist. It exists, but it's insignificant. I think that working on the "email noise problem" when you could be building a profitable business helping people prevent or cure life-threatening conditions is a

This is a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. In the meantime, real unsexy problems are ignored. It reminds me of this post: http://raganwald.posterous.com/why-the-fuck I meet too many startups in SV working on questionable incremen

That is a terrible, terrible headline. Prediction without commitment. They might as well write "We have absolutely no idea where the Mac is going."

I've done everything you can think of and more. We actually conceived once, it was a miscarriage. Edit: if you really want to know, we fertilized a total of 19 embryos in 4 attempts over the years. Only two of those were deemed implantable

As someone who spent six years trying to conceive and failed, reading this post makes me feel really bad. I'd point out that it's not Hacker News, but I'd have to do that for 50% of the posts on the front page at any given time.

Install WP Super Cache. It should be able to handle HN's traffic even if it's running on an iPhone 3.

Michael Arrington has written his share of trollish articles, but this is just mean spirited. I have a hard time remembering anything so hypocritical and hindsight-biased written after someone's death. I will do my best to avoid reading any

Anecdotal evidence + overgeneralization + bad usage of statistics. For example: "If we use wealth as a measure of success, Forbes’ January 2012 edition reveals that about 85% of America’s 400 Richest People (shown left) do, in fact, have a

Here's a list of books that I read this year and liked. My favorite was Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman. The rest are all worth reading. I hesitated to put "The Joy of Clojure" on that list because it's too narrow, but it's one o

I was going to post something similar earlier. I was put off by what I perceived as a very condescending tone in the essay. I got the impression that the author envisioned his audience as children, or unintelligent adults.
