Your last point is why I use hibernate. The actual boot time is barely noticeable on new laptops but even if I remember what I was doing when I hibernated it, which is rare, it still takes a while to get all my terminal windows back and eve

Given they can apply censorship per region I'm sure they could apply a simple setting change per region if they wanted to.

I meant it feels icky to approve of anything Apple does :P. EDIT: just to clarify, I 100% agree it's a great change, it's just that "right thing for the wrong reasons" situation. But it's a very good change and I ho

I agree, even though it feels a bit icky. I'm sure Apple have their eye on that advertising money in some way but anything that damages Facebook is highly likely to be a net positive.

I don't use it a great deal, but if you try it you can see why you'd use it over the OS screenshot. The easy answer is you can take a screenshot of a while page, or more than the portion that's showing.

It doesn't seem to be what this article is about, but 25 years ago I needed to have a hdd and a cd writer on the same IDE cable and I couldn't get it to work without windows blue-screening. It forced me to switch to linux and I ne

I know what you mean, it should store everything but not print it all out. That's kind of on application developers too though, so many programs I've worked on had terrible logging (too much information, the right information not

I think buying insurance would be a better analog to having good backups. You save some money by not buying insurance, just like when you skimp on IT infra. Warehouse fires / ransomware gangs will cost more if they happen, but if they

My school let you have two calculators so you could have notes on one of them and use the other. I don't really understand why, I'd rather just have paper notes. Fun things to play with though, the HP38G's we had had a nifty

Plus the redirect shenanigans some companies pull is pretty ridiculous too. It seems like logging into an intranet protected by MS login it flashes through about 15 different domains that I can't even make out.

Singledispatch is old, dates back to py2: https://docs.python.org/3/library/functools.html#functools.s... I definitely agree that multiple dispatch is a lot harder :). But most of the examples in the article didn&

I have nothing against Julia, but most of those examples could have been written with singledispatch in Python. Seems a bit disingenuous to just completely ignore it. (not to mention the "In Python, this is solved with" type examp

Just as a fun test a while ago I made a small desktop app with scala and scalafx/javafx. It's not bad, gives you some of the nice things you get from js guis (reactive rather than loads of callbacks etc).

It's a shame that cross-platform GUI toolkits seem to have fallen out of favour somewhat (as in, native toolkits like Qt or GTK). I wish it were not so. I can see why the electron route is so tempting, I just really hate them as a user

This doesn't answer your question, but I gave up on hosting my own email. I host my own other stuff where I can but email is just too much of a pain; constant delivery problems (especially to MS), spam is a pain to keep up with etc.
