FWIW, It’s one of the patches linked in their linked issue. However the commits do have some caveats called out, as do the techniques they use to achieve the higher allocations.

I appreciate the link. The GTT and SDMA tricks mentioned there don’t really increase the shared ram use imho. They just increase the virtual memory the GPU can address, but with several tradeoffs in terms of allocation and copy operations.

Can they access the full RAM? Afaik they get capped to a portion of total available RAM. But to your other point, very little of the current popular ML stack does more than CUDA and MPS. Some will do rocm but I don’t know if the AMD iGPUs a

Part of it is because X11 has improved a lot between 1987 and now. It’s not just been static. So Wayland has to capture those 37 years worth of engineering. But also, X was designed in a way that facilitates rapid development and easy integ

It’s not a separate team for the EU App Store, it’s a separate team for other app stores in the EU. As in one team for the Apple first party store in all countries and a second team for third party stores, which just happens to be in the EU

Ah I’m glad it ended up being fruitful then. To your question, consider that console games ship precompiled shader libraries that target the known GPU of that console. This prevents shader compile hitches etc. So the PS5 is effectively a su

I don’t think the PS4 and PS5 are all that similar. They use very different generations of CPU, and GPU. So shader libraries will be different for the most part. Also custom hardware on top of that for decoding and direct storage access, as

Important to note that this is because Java AWT’s now support Wayland, partly in thanks to Jetbrains themselves who contributed support back up. So this has a fairly large benefit beyond just their products.

Lots of things are unique about the x86 consoles. They have custom graphics APIs (and semi custom GPUs) which makes graphics translation one of the hardest parts. The graphics systems also assume shared memory which is not a given elsewhere

DXVK doesn’t deal with pre compiled shaders afaik. It needs them in DXIL or HLSL to function.

No, you can’t ship precompiled shaders for desktop easily because there’s no single backend (GPU) to compile for. Everyone ships either shader code or intermediate languages instead.

I think the actual issue is that Google makes bad UX often, and not toasts in general. Toasts themselves can be done well, but like every UI and UX element, they need to have some thought. I know Google have some good UI (sometimes UX on An

In the politest way, that is exactly my point. Different companies fund things differently and put up different barriers. Again, for the umpteenth time, I am not making a VALUE judgement. I am just saying they all do things differently and

To your question, that’s exactly my point. Without access to a companies books, you don’t know how they fund things. Take this as my response to your other reply as well. You don’t know if Microsoft chose to fund certain parts of their deve

What I’m suggesting more than asking is, when you say that open source has lifted their development burden, it makes it sound like it’s a unidirectional taking. And sure, some might be freeloading. But they also do contribute quite a bit to

Without an insight into how a company pays for its RnD internally, one cannot conclusively say that the consumers are the ones who pay for the HW/OS. I’ll also reiterate that the majority of devs pay 15% now on the App Store. Not 30%.

Literally the last section of my comment addressed that. It’s a single digit market share. How does that play into windows/mac sales then? And what about the decade+ of sales before the SteamDeck? And in that case, no, Valve didn’t pro

With all due respect, this is a very “stick your head in the ground” attitude about user experience. User experience matters and it’s not just about adapting.

Opinions are subjective by definition. Do not confuse opinions and facts. And the idea that “all platforms meet your needs if you put in enough effort and time ” is flawed because that time and effort is part of the needs. Again, to take th

What if the gains are not on the other platforms? You don’t know what gains they have that they care about that you don’t. To extend their grocery store analogy, the layout is a gain to them. You may not care, but it is tangible to some. Yo
