I’d like to point out that while this is possible, it requires: 1. Cooking skills 2. Awareness of these cheap ingredients 3.Time I took basic nutrition and cooking classes as a kid. Many people in lower income areas do not have that opportu

This line of discussion reminds me of a great quote by Sandi Metz, who's pretty well known in the ruby community for harping on the topic. One thing I saw in a talk of hers that really stuck with me: Repetition is preferable to the wro

I understand your issue with the policy, and I think this is a fine stance to take in cases where relations between two countries are good. Sadly, that is not the case between the US and China. Focusing on race here completely ignores the g

I’ve been at the kinds of places you describe as only hiring seniors. I’m personally not a fan of that kind of mentality for a few reasons: 1. (In San Francisco) This can lead to reqs being open for way too long. My company had several role

I’m not sure if that logic holds. Who’s to say Linux would not have been more or less successful if Linus had behaved differently? For all we know, Linux may have succeeded despite his behavior, rather than because of it. That said, I feel

In my experience it’s rare for orgs to hire for principal/staff/architect roles. What I’ve seen instead is people getting hired on as senior engineers and get promoted up from there after they’ve settled into the org.

Interesting article. A lot of the qualities the author descrives as required trains of a principal are things I always say a senior engineer/tech team lead should have—e.g. ability to act as a force multiplier, leading by example, and

Good question. I know for a fact that the type of sand is important, specifically that the shape and grain of the sand required for concrete makes a lot of readily available sand unusable for concrete. As for iron dust, I have to agree. The

Excellent points I was unaware of, thank you. I also agree with you on the point of public transit in infrastructure. I’m in SF, and not many people who work in the city can afford to live in it. This makes reliable and affordable transit c

Do you have sources for these claims? I always figured some low income housing is better than none, but if these programs are not effective I’d like to know why and how they fail.

Does this matter in practice? We have binocular vision--when I read, I focus on a word with both eyes. The occasions where I'm reading with just one eye or another are fairly rare.

I can’t speak for all of the US, but this is California law: a business owner is _personally_ liable for unpaid wages in the event of bankruptcy. The Department of Labor does not take kindly to people or business who cheat their employees o

Going to have to disagree with you there—if for no other reason than the tooling around Java is much more robust and available than for Clojure. I’m thinking static analysis, IDE support, fuzzers, linters, etc. Clojure has potential, but th
