As somebody who grew up in the Metro Detroit area and moved away, I’m unbelievably impressed by the bid Detroit put together. The entire region is so completely disfunctional. The idea of getting the neighboring counties (which have the mon

It's decades of unions that have led people to believe that there should be a certain sense of equality when it comes to wages. It's a ridiculous idea in the creative economy.

I think the definition is more cultural. The culture of a large bureaucratic car company is a lot different than most tech companies. They also have different views on talent

Ford has a serious marketing problem when it comes to hiring. It's pretty obvious that Google, Facebook, et al. spend a lot of energy and money marketing themselves as fantastic places to work with great pay and benefits. Most non-tech

You have to attract talent to Michigan though. California is in a prosperous loop where talented people move to the state for jobs which then encourages other companies to come to California for talent. The side effect of this is rising hou

I too grew up in the Metro Detroit area (and then moved to Seattle). The suburban schools are quite good. Oakland County schools are some of the best in the nation. International Academy was rated as the top public school in America for man

I think this is an excellent point. While Detroit has a relatively small population, it's metropolitan area does not. It's large metropolitan area has a large STEM talent pool thanks to the automotive sector, the second largest De

All of this development makes me wonder if Detroit could eventually rival Chicago as the tech hub in the Midwest

This is the biggest issue that rural America is facing right now. There's an incredibly large voting bloc of people that had vocational training in mining, manufacturing, etc, etc. Their training is now worthless and nobody has a great

Just ask. You can use your other job as leverage. The fact is, you specifically say that you "feel I need the internship experience to make transitioning out of school into a web dev position easier." Considering this is your only

Well, I feel like I'm just reiterating what everyone else is saying. 1) What's with the preoccupation behind making 300k? 2) Would finding a less stressful job, even if it paid the same, make you happier? 3) It sounds like there&#

There's quite a bit of incorrect information on here. If you work for Facebook, I don't think the only sensible options are to ask for a 50% (!) raise or leave.

So where does the line get drawn? Foreigners with Stanford degrees don't need visas but those else where do? What about MIT? Arizona State? If you establish an arbitrary boundary, it won't make sense.

Lots of Detroit based news coming from Waymo. I wonder how long it will be until Waymo has a larger base of operations in the area and makes a significant hiring push?

The Metropolitan area surrounding Detroit has done a remarkable job masking the city. Take Oakland County, the largest surrounding county by population. It has the highest per-capita family income in the Midwest and one of the highest in th
