Don't look in Detroit just yet. The city isn't there (yet!). Look in Ann Arbor.

No, the process is horrendous, especially for the competitive companies. Just look at Google's process: talk with recruiter, 1-2 phone screens, 5 on-site interviews, and then a couple phone calls with teams. All before you get an offer

The groupthink at HN can be very severe at times. SE Michigan (especially Ann Arbor) is a lovely place! Lots of similarities to SV - smart people, culture, great schools. Plus, insanely cheap. The area is going to be a hotbed for tech compa

SE Michigan does have more engineering degrees per capita than any other area in the country. Amazon already has an engineering office there. Google moving is just them trying to get ahead of the curve. The longer they wait to establish a m

I'm not surprised that the interns got fired. Not because of the topic at hand, but because of the petition. In many ways, an organized petition could be seen as the beginning of union organization. Forget about opinions about unions f

I've noticed that some people seem to way overprepare for Google interviews in particular. I get that they're hard, but how much practice do you really need for, say, a phone screen?

I don't know how I feel about these past few changes. Github is trying to compete more and more with LinkedIn. My user page is now becoming a resume, complete with summary and carefully chosen projects. Where does this end?

I feel like a similar argument can be said for any major engineering company. Most new grads heading to Facebook, Google and the like are doing grunt work. Unless you're working at a true startup, where you know everybody's name,

Is there not a chance they're planning on doing this themselves? They spent all that money on the Xfinity rebrand. At this point, Comcast is essentially Xfinity + NBCUniversal.

This is one of those times when Silicon Valley needs to step aside its rhetoric. In this case, Bill wasn't a mentor or a VC - he was a friend and confidant. And Ben's pain isn't from losing a mentor or a business parent - it&

It's interesting that you put GM's partnership with CMU at the same level as Ford and Google. I don't think any major automaker has an in house effort anywhere close to Google. Most of them rely on suppliers like Bosch for th

The juxtaposition between Google and Facebook alongside Palantir seems strange. Is Palantir really a big, bloated company now? I would've assumed they would be listed by Uber, Airbnb, and Pinterest.

At what point is Google going to officially become a consulting company? Right now, they seem to be playing arbitrage with engineering talent. They buy up engineers with large salaries and fancy perks. Those people, who now span almost ever

I've worked one of these $20k SV internships, so I'd like to give my two cents. I worked for a large startup that hired around ~100 interns - not a Google or Microsoft by any means. There is a relative meritocracy for these positi
